Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
SEPT. 16
8:24 a.m. — A fire alarm at Alexanderwohl Church was determined by Goessel firefighters to have been a false alarm caused by a faulty detector.
10:24 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman with possible gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
1:18 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman suspected of having pneumonia at a home on Lakeshore Dr. near Rock Rd. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.
3:50 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman with a pulmonary embolism was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.
5:19 p.m. — Traveling back from Newton, Marion ambulance was notified that an additional transfer — apparently of the woman brought in at 1:18 p.m. — would be requested. The ambulance arrived at St. Luke at 6:30 p.m. and transferred the patient to NMC.
8:14 p.m. — A report of a gas leak in a bathroom of a home in the 300 block of S. Kennedy St. was determined to be a false alarm by Hillsboro firefighters.
SEPT. 17
7:23 a.m. — After Lincolnville firefighters were paged four times with no immediate response, Marion firefighters were dispatched for a tree fire caused by lightning in the 400 block of Topeka Ave. in Lincolnville. A Lincolnville firefighter then responded, and the call for Marion firefighters was canceled. The fire was extinguished within 19 minutes.
5:34 p.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances, Hillsboro rescue squad, Goessel firefighter and first responders, a LifeSafe helicopter, the county emergency manager, and Kansas Department of Transportation workers all were dispatched for a car-semi accident blocking both lanes of K-16 at 130th Rd.
Tampa ambulance also was ordered to stand by at Hillsboro in case of additional calls, but that call was canceled after it was determined that no injuries were reported and that both drivers declined to be taken to a hospital.
Firefighters remained on the scene for more than four hours diverting traffic and dealing with spills of fuel, oil, and turkey meat, which had to be dammed because of hazardous chemicals used in processing. Some diverted drivers reported becoming stuck on mud roads.
6:02 p.m. — A 74-year-old man with an unspecified condition was transferred from Peabody Health and Rehab to NMC.
THURSDAY
2:27 a.m. — A woman in her 40s having a seizure at a residence in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
6:49 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched for a 2-year-old girl who may have swallowed nail polish at an apartment at Hilltop Manor in Marion, but the call was canceled before the ambulance arrived. The girl instead was taken to a hospital by private vehicle.
10:06 a.m. — A 67-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC.
1:13 p.m. — A fire alarm at Parkside Homes was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm caused by a technician working on a fire suppression system in the nursing home’s kitchen.
1:28 p.m. — An 81-year-old woman who fell and cut her head on a garage door at her home in the 900 block of S. Ash St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
2:02 a.m. — An unspecified patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.
3:14 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman having trouble breathing in the courthouse basement in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
6:06 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 7:35 p.m. at a football game at Warrior Stadium.
10:11 p.m. — A 75-year-old man on blood thinners who fell and hurt his back and head at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
FRIDAY
5:45 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was ordered to stand by at the former Peabody ambulance station until deputies could determine whether it was safe to approach a wreck involving a possibly intoxicated driver on 60th Rd. east of Limestone Rd. The driver declined to be taken to a hospital and was released into deputies’ custody.
1:50 p.m. — A 65-year-old man, incoherent and vomiting outside Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion, was examined by Marion ambulance attendants who then followed when he was taken to St. Luke by a private vehicle.
3:06 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, to receive what was termed a higher level of care.
3:21 p.m. — Fire in a hay bale at the Hillsboro city lagoons south of US-56 on Kanza Rd. was extinguished within 10 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.
6:15 p.m. — Peabody firefighters were dispatched to a Harvey County farmhouse near what in Marion County would be 70th and Indigo Rds. for what was reported as a carbon monoxide odor even though carbon monoxide is odorless. Natural gas service, which had been turned off, was turned back on. Firefighters reported detecting no fumes after checking inside and outside the house but did discover a faulty carbon monoxide detector.
6:45 p.m. — An 80-year-old man who fell at a farm on Sunset Rd. south of 140th Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
6:50 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left to stand by until 10:11 p.m. at a football game at Joel Wiens Stadium in Hillsboro.
10:24 p.m. — A 64-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The call originally went to Marion ambulance but was reassigned by Hillsboro ambulance attendants.
SATURDAY
12:17 a.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance heading to Wichita, Marion ambulance and Hillsboro first responders were dispatched for a 64-year-old woman who may have suffered a stroke or a seizure at a home in the 400 block of E. 1st St. in Hillsboro. The woman declined to be taken to a hospital by the ambulance, opting instead to go by private vehicle.
1:17 a.m. — Returning from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was sent at the request of police to a fight at a home in the 200 block of N. Ash St. in Hillsboro. An unspecified patient was taken to HCH.
5:03 a.m. — A 64-year-old woman with seizures, possibly the person taken in by private vehicle earlier in the night, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to St. Francis.
6:05 a.m. — The county emergency manager set up a command trailer, complete with doughnuts, for public safety personnel until 4:20 p.m. at Hillsboro’s Arts and Crafts Fair.
8:50 a.m. — Tampa ambulance headed to Hillsboro to stand by until 3:45 p.m. at the Arts and Crafts Fair and at a Tabor College football game.
10:31 p.m. — A 52-year-old intoxicated man who fell and hit his head while camping near Lakeshore Dr. and Back Bay Ct. at Marion County Lake declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
SUNDAY
10:41 a.m. — A 62-year-old man with a history of dementia who fell off a couch at 3 a.m. and remained on the floor at a farmhouse on Kanza Rd. north of US-56 was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke for observation.
MONDAY
3:45 a.m. — Marion ambulance announced that it was short-staffed and would be available only as a first-response unit until 5:57 p.m.
5:02 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 7:36 p.m. for a football game at Goessel.
6:07 p.m. — Peabody firefighters were dispatched for an alarm at Peabody Health and Rehab but were told to stand down before they arrived because a maintenance worker had accidentally activated the alarm.
6:15 p.m. — A call to Marion firefighters about a cloud of anhydrous ammonia around tanks at Cooperative Grain and Supply in Marion was canceled after law enforcement officers determined that co-op workers were handling the situation.
8:18 p.m. — A 35-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis on an emergency basis. The call initially went to Marion ambulance but was changed by Hillsboro ambulance attendants.
