Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

OCT. 7

5:58 a.m. — A 69-year-old woman with stroke-like symptoms at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Three Marion firefighters helped lift her.

12:02 p.m. — A 55-year-old man with chest pain at Carriage Manor apartments in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded but was called off before it arrived.

1 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman with stomach pain at a home on Strassburg St. in Marion Reservoir’s Eastshore subdivision was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Marion ambulance.

6:15 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman with a perforated bowel, possibly the same patient brought in earlier, was transferred by Marion ambulance from HCH to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. Hillsboro ambulance initially was paged, but Marion medics opted to take the call instead.

OCT. 8

9 a.m. — A 67-year-old man who fell and developed chest pain at a home in the 300 block of S. 1st St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

9:14 a.m. — Fire in hay at a farm near 120th and Quail Creek Rds. was extinguished within an hour by Florence firefighters after no Peabody firefighters responded to a page.

10:07 a.m. — A 47-year-old man not feeling well at Prairie View mental health center in Hillsboro after consuming nearly a gallon of alcohol was taken to HCH by a backup ambulance based in Hillsboro.

11:12 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman who fell and may have broken a hip at a home in the 300 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Peabody firefighters helped lift her.

11:13 a.m. — Residents determined that smoke in a farmhouse at 190th and Zebulon Rds. was caused by a malfunctioning water heater, which they disconnected before Marion and Florence firefighters arrived. Marion ambulance attendants checked four residents for smoke inhalation but none were taken to a hospital. Firefighters briefly were confused after dispatchers accidentally resent a text message about the hay fire at 120th and Quail Creek Rds.

1:34 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance, Hillsboro police, and a coroner responded to a report of a death at Oakwood Manor apartments in Hillsboro.

THURSDAY

6:52 a.m. — An unspecified patient complaining of chest pains at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by a backup ambulance based in Hillsboro. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

11:06 a.m. — A pregnant 18-year-old who suffered a seizure in the 700 block of W. 7th St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, opting instead to go by private vehicle.

11:25 a.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s Jost Hall in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm.

1:10 a.m. — Ramona, Lost Springs, and Lincolnville firefighters began traveling to Centre High School for a fire prevention program.

5:07 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 7:19 p.m. at a football game in Goessel.

FRIDAY

11:27 a.m. — A 74-year-old woman on chemotherapy and not feeling well at a farmhouse near 70th and Jade Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:57 a.m. — With Marion ambulance being serviced and Hillsboro ambulance on another call, Tampa ambulance was dispatched for an unresponsive 71-year-old man at Peabody Health and Rehab. Because the ambulance was more than 40 minutes away, a Newton ambulance was dispatched as well. After completing its run to Newton, Hillsboro ambulance also was diverted to the call. Tampa ambulance was told to stand by instead at Pilsen in case of additional calls until a backup ambulance could be staffed at Marion. Hillsboro ambulance arrived in Peabody at 12:36 p.m., but the patient apparently was transported by Newton ambulance, which had arrived earlier. Tampa ambulance was sent back to its station at 12:47 p.m.

3:59 p.m. — A Goessel firefighter reported a wreck on K-15 a mile south of the Marion / Harvey county line.

6:33 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 9:37 p.m. at a football game at Centre, and Hillsboro ambulance left to stand by until 10:01 p.m. at a football game at Goessel.

SATURDAY

11:51 a.m. — A driver drifting in and out of consciousness while trapped in a pickup truck after a wreck with a semitrailer truck on US-50 near Alfalfa Rd. was checked by Marion ambulance attendants before being extricated by Florence firefighters and taken to NMC Health. Hillsboro ambulance and a LifeSave helicopter also were dispatched but were told they would not be needed before they arrived. Firefighters helped direct traffic until 2:13 p.m.

9:59 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman with numb legs after starting new medication at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Medics initially had trouble gaining entry to the apartment building.

SUNDAY

10:25 a.m. — A Hillsboro firefighter asked for other firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance attendants to help lift an unspecified person at a home in the 500 block of E. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro.

11:13 a.m. — Marion ambulance began standing by at Rocky’s Last Stand, an off-road motorcycle race on Timber Rd. north of US-56.

2:03 p.m. — Marion ambulance was called away from the motorcycle race to transfer a 58-year-old man from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

2:06 p.m. — With Marion ambulance on another call, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched along with Lincolnville first responders for a 71-year-old man with chest pain at a home in the 200 block of Adams St. in Lincolnville. An ambulance supervisor also responded. First responders asked for a Dickinson County ambulance to be dispatched as well, but when Hillsboro ambulance arrived at 2:29 p.m., that call was canceled. Hillsboro ambulance took the patient to St. Luke. More than two hours later, first responders were confused when a text message about the call reappeared on their cell phones.

7:50 p.m. — An unspecified patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Dole Veterans Affairs Hospital in Wichita.

MONDAY

11:59 a.m. — Three people involved in a traffic accident near Marion Ace Hardware declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

3:17 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s Ediger Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm caused by someone pulling an alarm handle.

3:50 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman with gastrointestinal bleeding at Salem Home in Hillsboro was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health.

5:57 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left to stand by until 7:44 p.m. at a football game at an unspecified location.

6:41 p.m. — Marion ambulance left to stand by at a football game in Marion but determined upon arrival that no game was scheduled.

8:24 p.m. — A 39-year-old woman with an unspecified condition was transferred by Marion ambulance from HCH to St. Francis. The call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance, but Marion ambulance attendants volunteered to respond instead.
