Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
OCT. 21
1:56 a.m. — A 55-year-old woman with pneumonia was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital, Marion, to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.
2:47 a.m. — A 73-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was helped up by Hillsboro ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital. Her address initially was misreported as being at Salem Home and as being on Park Pl. instead of on Park Ave.
12:27 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman with low potassium in her blood was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
6:13 p.m. — A suddenly confused 80-year-old woman at a farmhouse near US-56/77 and 320th Rd., was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders arrived within 18 minutes and cared for the patient until the ambulance arrived eight minutes later.
7:29 p.m. — A 40-year-old man who cut his head and hurt his shoulder when his semi-trailer truck veered off US-56 and turned onto its side in a ditch east of Lehigh was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Lehigh and Hillsboro firefighters also were dispatched but were told they would not be needed. Two county emergency managers also responded. A Hillsboro firefighter complained that a law enforcement officer needlessly sped through Hillsboro to reach the wreck even though the wreck presented no emergency conditions.
9:12 p.m. — A 76-year-old man with a large cut on his face was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.
11:18 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was notified that, when it returned from Wesley, it would be asked to transfer the 40-year-old injured in the semi accident to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Marion ambulance handled the call instead, waiting until Hillsboro ambulance returned to the county before leaving.
OCT. 22
1:31 a.m. — After being paged four times, three Marion firefighters responded to a report of a possible natural gas leak at Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion. In place of Marion ambulance, which still was en route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched because the person reporting the leak also reported having a headache. Firefighters detected no gas, and the person with the headache declined to be taken to a hospital.
8:27 a.m. — An 83-year-old man with an obstructed bowel was transferred by Marion ambulance to McPherson Center for Health.
11:12 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to McPherson Center for Health.
THURSDAY
2:27 p.m. — A disoriented 69-year-old man who hurt his head when he fell six feet off a roof in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance after some confusion about the address,
FRIDAY
7:44 a.m. — A basement heater smoking at a farm on 170th Rd. east of U.S.-77 was determined by a Florence firefighter first on the scene to pose no problems. Marion firefighters continued to do further checking, but Hillsboro and Florence firefighters and Marion ambulance, which also were dispatched, were told they would not be needed.
8:01 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance briefly was dispatched for a report of a 70-year-old man who fell at Salem Home, but Salem Home called back and canceled the call.
11:23 a.m. — A 77-year-old man with altered mental status and low blood pressure was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home to HCH.
3:39 p.m. — Although the call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance, Marion ambulance ended up transferring from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita. a 77-year-old man, possibly from the previous call, now diagnosed with sepsis.
6:27 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left to stand by until 9:26 p.m. at a Centre High School football game.
7:13 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman with ulcerated arteries was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis.
SATURDAY
9:12 a.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 12:11 p.m. at a cross-country meet in Marion and later was joined until 12:40 p.m. by a Marion Fire Department brush truck.
2:14 p.m. — A 94-year-old man who fell and hurt his shoulder at Parkside Homes declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
4:20 p.m. — A Hillsboro fire truck and rescue squad, a Goessel fire truck, and a Marion fire truck left to stand by until 9:24 p.m. at a demolition derby at the county fairgrounds in Hillsboro.
SUNDAY
8:32 a.m. — A 1-year-old girl with trauma was transferred on an emergency basis from St. Luke to Wesley. The call initially went to Marion ambulance, but Hillsboro ambulance handled it instead.
10:16 a.m. — An 83-year-old woman who fell and may have broken her ankle at a farm near 100th and Remington Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance. With Hillsboro ambulance still on its call to Wichita, Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 11:39 a.m. in case of additional calls.
1:25 p.m. — A 78-year-old man with an inadequate oxygen supply was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.
4:01 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman with low blood-oxygen level at Bethesda Home in Goessel was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health.
5 p.m. — A report of a natural gas odor at a home in the 200 block of N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm, but Atmos Energy was alerted to check further.
6:52 p.m. — After air bags deployed, Marion ambulance was dispatched to check occupants of a vehicle that hit a deer on K-150 at the county line, but law enforcement officers canceled the call before the ambulance arrived.
7:02 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College townhouses was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm caused by a cooking accident.
MONDAY
8:26 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman with altered mental status, possibly in reaction to medication, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Bethesda Home in Goessel to NMC Health. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.
9:07 a.m. — A 64-year-old woman with an unspecified condition at Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
3:58 p.m. — A clammy, dizzy 45-year-old woman with chest pain outside Ampride in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
6:18 p.m. — A Peabody police officer with what dispatchers described as a bad cut outside the Peabody police station was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.
7:09 p.m. — At the request of a sheriff’s deputy, Peabody firefighters were dispatched to a fire that spread from a brush pile to a hedge row near 100th and Mustang Rds. Fire in the trees was extinguished in less than an hour.
7:12 p.m. — A 91-year-old man with trouble breathing at a farmhouse near 160th and Jade Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. The county’s interim ambulance director also responded.
9:48 p.m. — An uninjured 64-year-old woman who fell at Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.
