MONDAY
3:09 a.m. — One of the most confusing calls in recent months began with dispatchers assigning Marion ambulance to go to Homestead Senior Residences in Marion for a 66-year-old woman who reportedly was not responding normally.
For unannounced reasons, Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro took the call instead. A medic asked for police to be sent as well.
Dispatchers updated medics that a caller could not determine whether the woman was breathing. Several minutes later, a Marion police officer reported that she was breathing fine, had suffered cramps and fallen on her way back from a bathroom, was uninjured, and required only help getting back up.
The ambulance and supervisor arrived 15 minutes after the call came in. Twenty minutes after their arrival, medics reported that they would take the woman, who had become nauseated after their arrival, to St. Luke.
A nurse at St. Luke asked for the patient’s initials. A medic responded that she would not violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act by providing them. St. Luke said initials would not violate HIPAA, but they were not provided.
9:36 a.m. — A 58-year-old man complaining of rib pain after falling 10 to 12 feet out of a deer-hunting tree stand near 170th and Clover Rds. was taken by Florence firefighters to the US-50/77 roundabout at Florence, transferred to Hillsboro ambulance, and taken to Wesley. An ambulance supervisor also responded.
With Marion ambulance continuing to be unavailable, Tampa ambulance was ordered at 10:10 a.m. to stand by until 12:32 p.m. at the Hillsboro ambulance station in case of additional calls.
12:46 p.m. — With Marion ambulance continuing to be unavailable, a 74-year-old woman who passed out twice and hit her head in the 300 block of Grandview Ave. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance, which arrived 24 minutes after the initial call. An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro also responded.
2:17 p.m. — Marion firefighters pinched off a natural gas line that somehow was cut near Main and Vine Sts. on the west edge of town.
5:22 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still unavailable, Hillsboro ambulance transferred an unspecified patient from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.
Tampa ambulance, which reported difficulty receiving dispatchers’ transmissions, again was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 8:10 p.m. in case of additional calls.
An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro also went to St. Luke.
