Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

NOV. 11

8:41 a.m. — A 72-year-old man who fell at a house in the 400 block of S. Birch St. in Hillsboro was help up by medics aboard Hillsboro ambulance. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:17 p.m. — Multiple fire alarms at Peabody-Burns High School were determined to be a test before Peabody firefighters arrived.

5:18 p.m. — An injured 5-year-old was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to a pediatric emergency room at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

7:16 p.m. — Although no injuries were reported, a sheriff’s deputy asked Marion ambulance to check a driver involved in what was described as a head-on collision involving a semi-trailer truck at 190th and Limestone Rds. A later report filed by a deputy indicated that a van had hit a parked semi. The van driver declined to be taken to a hospital.

11:53 p.m. — A 66-year-old woman with a transfusion emergency was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

NOV. 12

3:14 a.m. — A 70-year-old man who fell and hit his head at a house in the 300 block of N. Birch St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

12:09 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman who fell at a house in the 400 block of S. Thorp St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants and firefighters. Marion firefighters arrived before the ambulance, which did not arrive until 22 minutes after the call came in. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:23 p.m. — The woman from the Thorp St. call changed her mind and asked for Marion ambulance to take her to St. Luke.

6:39 p.m. — An automated alert about air bags deploying caused Marion ambulance and Burns first responders to be sent to a wreck on US-77 near 50th Rd. The wreck, which the alert said did not involve injuries, turned out to be a deer strike, and the ambulance call was canceled. Before that was known, however, Hillsboro ambulance relocated to Marion to stand by in case an additional ambulance was needed.

8:24 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman with sepsis was transferred from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center. The call was assigned to Marion ambulance, but Hillsboro ambulance responded instead.

THURSDAY

11:58 a.m. — A 75-year-old woman who fainted at Carlsons’ Grocery in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro also responded but was told he would not be needed.

2:26 p.m. — A brush fire that spread into trees near 230th and Turkey Creek Rd. was contained within an hour by Marion firefighters, one of whom called in the alarm.

7:27 p.m. — A 65-year-old man injured in a car wreck was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. No report of a traffic accident was released.

11:07 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s Harms Hall was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm caused by a cooking accident.

FRIDAY

6:26 a.m. — A 94-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, hit her head, and remained there for an undetermined time was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:23 a.m. — Four people, at least one of whom was complaining of pain after hitting a deer on US-77 south of 190th Rd., declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

12:14 p.m. — A large grass fire headed toward a residence near 210th Rd. and K-15 was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

5:13 p.m. — Marion firefighters, Marion and Hillsboro ambulances, and a helicopter ambulance were dispatched for a two-vehicle wreck in which one vehicle reportedly ran a stop sign on 150th Rd. and T-boned another vehicle on Sunflower Rd. Marion ambulance took one patient to NMC Health. Hillsboro ambulance took a second to St. Luke. The helicopter ambulance was canceled.

8:23 p.m. — An uninjured 61-year-old man who fell at a house in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was help up by medics aboard Marion ambulance. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

SATURDAY

10:47 a.m. — A 60-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer.

1:13 p.m. — Fire in a baler south of 150th and Yarrow Rds. was extinguished within seven minutes by Florence firefighters.

5:21 p.m. — With Marion ambulance not staffed, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched along with a single Marion fire truck to a two-vehicle wreck on K-150 near Alfalfa Rd. An ambulance supervisor based in Hillsboro also responded.

After a deputy said there would be two patients and medics said there might be as many as four, the supervisor stopped at the Marion ambulance station to pick up Marion ambulance, ordered that Tampa ambulance also be dispatched, and asked for Florence first responders to be dispatched, presumably to drive the short-staffed Marion ambulance. A helicopter ambulance also was dispatched.

In the end, Hillsboro ambulance took a single patient to Wesley, and calls to other ambulances were canceled before they arrived. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by until 8:16 p.m. in Hillsboro in case of additional calls.

SUNDAY

7:54 a.m. — A single Florence fire truck was dispatched to help open the hood of a vehicle involved in a wreck at Sunflower and 120th Rds.

Noon — Tampa ambulance was dispatched for two women bit by dogs in the 100 block of E. Chicago Ave. in Lost Springs. Both declined to be taken to a hospital. An off-duty medic was the first to arrive. Lincolnville first responders also were paged but were told to wait until the scene was secure and then were told they would not be needed.

4:19 p.m. — Florence, Peabody, and Marion firefighters and Marion ambulance were dispatched for a report of a possible fire at the MKC elevator in Florence. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that what seemed to be black smoke was actually normal venting of grain dust.

4:41 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a medical alarm activated by a woman falling at a house in the 300 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

4:49 p.m. — Marion ambulance was told to stand by until 5:15 p.m. outside Town & Country Café in Florence. Reasons were conveyed privately by telephone instead of radio transmissions.

11:30 p.m. — An unspecified patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart.

MONDAY

4:13 p.m. — A 49-year-old woman unable to sit up because of back pain at a house in the 200 block of N. Main St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:32 p.m. — A man feeling numb, having trouble breathing. and experiencing slurred speech while pulled over in a van on US-50 between Timber and Turkey Creek Rds. was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. The call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance but was changed. Florence first responders also were paged but did not answer.

9:09 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell and gashed the back of her head at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:50 p.m. — A 65-year-old man who fell at a house in the 500 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.
