Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

NOV. 24

12:05 a.m. — Fire in a heating unit above a washer at an apartment in the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters. Marion and Durham firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance also were dispatched but were told they would not be needed.

11:41 a.m. — A woman who lost what was termed a significant amount of blood from a cat scratch in the 200 block of S. Church St. in Goessel was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. Arriving 13 minutes before the ambulance, Goessel first responders provided initial care.

1:38 p.m. — A fire alarm at Parkside Homes was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm.

2:11 p.m. — A fire alarm at Bethesda Home in Goessel was determined before Goessel firefighters arrived to be a false alarm caused by a resident pulling an alarm.

5:50 p.m. — A 75-year-old in end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Salem Home, Hillsboro, to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

10:55 p.m. — Another fire alarm at Parkside Homes was canceled by an alarm company before Hillsboro firefighters were able to gain access to the building.

NOV. 25

12:25 a.m. — A 64-year-old woman needing a lift from her wheelchair at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was helped by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

8:44 a.m. — An 87-year-old man with an undisclosed complaint at an apartment in the 100 block of N. Washington St. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:59 p.m. — A 34-year-old man with high blood sugar who had been vomiting all day at Country Haven Inn in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

Nov. 26

2:02 a.m. — What apparently was the same patient, now diagnosed as suffering from withdrawal, a head injury, and seizures, was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

5:33 p.m. — Pull alarms at the wood shop and administrative offices at Centre schools were determined before Lincolnville firefighters arrived to be false alarms activated by maintenance workers.

7:06 p.m. — A customer detained at Carlsons’ Grocery in Marion because he was thought to be suffering from low blood sugar declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

THANKSGIVING

1:46 p.m. — A 70-year-old man with low blood pressure in the 300 block of N. Ash St. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. The address initially was misreported as being on Birch St., but an ambulance supervisor who also responded corrected the location.

2:06 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance occupied, Tampa ambulance was sent to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro for an 87-year-old woman who fell and hit her head. The ambulance supervisor relocated from Ash St. and provided initial care until the ambulance arrived at 2:33 p.m. and transferred the woman to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

4:17 p.m. — Remnants of a stove fire at a home in the 200 block of S. Freeborn St. in Marion were checked by Marion firefighters.

7:04 p.m. — A 64-year-old man suspected of having a heart attack at a mobile home in the 600 block of E. Marion Ave. in Goessel was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders and an ambulance supervisor also answered the call.

FRIDAY

2:18 p.m. — A firm alarm at Parkside Homes was canceled by an alarm company, which said it was only a test, before Hillsboro firefighters arrived.

2:25 p.m. — Yet another fire alarm at Parkside Homes was canceled by an alarm company, again saying it was only a test, before Hillsboro firefighters arrived. Firefighters went to the nursing home nonetheless and reported that the alarm company had told dispatchers before the tests that tests would be conducted. Dispatchers said they had no record of this.

3:19 p.m. — Fire in a vehicle at the Hillsboro compost site off Ash St. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

4:50 p.m. — A 61-year-old woman complaining of vomiting and diarrhea at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Police also were called because the door to the woman’s apartment was locked and a key had to be obtained from a lockbox.

6:38 p.m. — A 75-year-old woman with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

10:42 p.m. — An 80-year-old woman with abdominal pain was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

SATURDAY

2:04 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home in the 700 block of W. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

4:03 a.m. — An 87-year-old man having trouble getting up after taking medication at an apartment in the 100 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:47 a.m. — An 80-year-old woman who fell out of bed at a home in the 100 block of S. Washington Ave. in Burns was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance.

11:43 a.m. — Two people injured in a two-vehicle accident on US-77 at 5th St. in Florence were taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Florence firefighters arrived within one minute and provided initial evaluation of the patients pending the ambulance’s arrival 12 minutes later.

5:20 p.m. — Four Marion fire trucks participated until 5:54 p.m. in the Holly Jolly Christmas parade in Marion.

5:45 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman with vomiting and diarrhea at a home in the 200 block of N. Washington St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:16 p.m. — A teenage girl who reportedly took at many as 50 ibuprofen pills at a home in the 400 block of Sycamore St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. However, ambulance attendants reported that they would follow law enforcement officers as they transported the girl to St. Luke. Marion ambulance initially started to respond as well but attendants opted not to after hearing that the overdose involved ibuprofen.

8:54 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with a slow heartbeat was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn. The call originally was assigned to Marion ambulance, but Hillsboro ambulance attendants said they would take the call instead.

SUNDAY

7:58 a.m. — Garbled transmissions indicate Hillsboro firefighters responded to a fire alarm in the 300 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro. Additional information was not available.

3:11 p.m. — A vehicle fully engulfed in flames in a muddy ditch along 230th Rd. west of Alamo Rd. was extinguished within 35 minutes by Hillsboro and Lehigh firefighters who later asked for a tow truck to extricate a fire truck from the mud.

8:44 p.m. — A 20-month-old boy having seizures at a home in the 800 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

1:18 a.m. — A 67-year-old man who fell and cut the back of his head on a bed pan at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:26 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched after a medical alarm accidentally activated by a 78-year-old woman at a home on Random Rd. at Marion County Lake.

1:17 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance took an undescribed patient home from HCH.

2:57 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman with pneumonia was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to NMC Health.

8:27 p.m. — A 21-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley Woodlawn.
