Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

DEC. 21

12:37 a.m. — A 53-year-old man who fell at a home in the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

7:42 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell and became dizzy at a home in the 400 block of S. Adams St. in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:06 a.m. — Possibly the same patient was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

12:26 p.m. — A 94-year-old woman who fell and hurt her leg at a home in the 300 block of S. Thorp St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

3:38 p.m. — Possibly the same patient, now diagnosed with a broken hip, was ordered transferred from St. Luke to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center.

3:42 p.m. — Marion ambulance delayed the transfer to meet a vehicle heading toward Marion on Remington Rd. with a man bleeding after accidentally being shot in the hand. The ambulance took him to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Hillsboro ambulance also responded to the gunshot call, and Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls.

After Marion ambulance left for Wesley, Tampa ambulance was redirected to complete Marion ambulance’s original assignment of transferring the woman with the broken hip to NMC.

DEC. 22

6:23 a.m. — A 71-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease having trouble breathing at a home in the 200 block of N. Plum St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:01 a.m. — A 75-year-old man who fell at a home in the 100 block of N. 2nd St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

11:51 a.m. — A 27-year-old man who suffered multiple seizures at Indian Guide Terrace apartments in Peabody was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance, which had some trouble receiving the initial dispatch.

2:51 p.m. — A 91-year-old woman with a slow heartbeat was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart.

5:22 p.m. — An 85-year-old woman who fell twice at a home on Navajo Rd. in Canada was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

DEC. 23

2:57 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman who suffered a stroke was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.

10:36 a.m. — A 17-year-old girl who passed out several times at a home south of Lost Springs on Vista Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders arrived 14 minutes after the initial call and evaluated the patient until the ambulance arrived 10 minutes later.

3:13 p.m. — A 62-year-old man with a low number of white blood cells was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to NMC. The call originally went to Marion ambulance.

5:45 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters were dispatched to help search for a runaway 8- or 9-year-old boy last seen between Washington and Lincoln Sts. in Hillsboro. The boy was located by Hillsboro police before firefighters were deployed.

10:21 p.m. — An 18-year-old girl, 16 weeks pregnant and suffering seizures from a high fever at a home in the 100 block of S. Washington Ave. in Burns, declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, opting instead to go by private vehicle. Burns first responders arrived within 11 minutes and evaluated the patient until the ambulance arrived 16 minutes later.

CHRISTMAS EVE

8:35 a.m. — A 61-year-old woman vomiting blood at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

2:22 p.m. — A 27-year-old who fell at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance, opting instead to go by private vehicle.

3:31 p.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances were dispatched to check on three reportedly uninjured people involved in a one-vehicle wreck on 260th Rd. between Quail Creek and Remington Rds. None of them were taken to a hospital. Lincolnville and Marion firefighters were dispatched as well. The call to Hillsboro ambulance was canceled before it arrived.

CHRISTMAS

12:07 a.m. — An 85-year-old man who had been drinking and fell down stairs, cutting his head, at a house near Tabor Church at 90th and Chisholm Trail Rd. was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders arrived within 17 minutes and evaluated the patient until the ambulance arrived five minutes later.

2:25 a.m. — A 61-year-old man who fell twice and was bleeding from his head at a home near the county line and Goldenrod Rd. declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:03 p.m. — A fire alarm at Alexanderwohl Church was determined by Goessel firefighters to have been caused by a faulty sensor.

11:15 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman with COPD having trouble breathing at a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

FRIDAY

6:29 a.m. — A 61-year-old woman with stomach pain at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:33 a.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched for an 86-year-old woman with chest pain at a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion. Broadcasts do not indicate whether the patient was taken to a hospital.

2:25 p.m. — A woman in her 80s stopped by police in the 400 block of N. Lincoln St. in Marion, was checked at an officer’s request by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

5:16 p.m. — A vehicle upside down in a ditch and fully engulfed in flames north of 210th and Alamo Rds. was extinguished within 21 minutes by Hillsboro and Lehigh firefighters. Hillsboro ambulance also was dispatched but found no patients.

5:38 p.m. — Marion, Peabody, and Florence firefighters were dispatched to a fire in an unoccupied shed in the 200 block of N. 2nd St. in Marion. Marion firefighters extinguished the blaze within 13 minutes. Peabody and Florence firefighters were told they would not be needed before they arrived.

9:19 p.m. — Marion ambulance was dispatched to transfer an 87-year-old man with a kidney stone from St. Luke to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita.

9:22 p.m. — The ambulance was redirected along with Marion firefighters to a one-vehicle wreck in which a person reportedly was bleeding from his head at K-150 at Xavier Rd. Originally destined for St. Luke, he was taken instead to Wesley.

11:11 p.m. — A 79-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 800 block of N. Olive St. in Peabody was taken to NMC by Hillsboro ambulance. With both full-time ambulances out of the county, Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 12:55 a.m. in case of additional calls.

SATURDAY

3:12 a.m. — A 13-year-old boy stuck in his room at a home in the 300 block of S. Adams St. was freed within 21 minutes by Hillsboro firefighters.

4:04 a.m. — Another fire alarm at Alexanderwohl Church was determined by Goessel firefighters to have been a false alarm. As firefighters were leaving, an alarm company reported a second alarm at the church, and firefighters returned to check it out. They determined that it, too, was a false alarm. Just as firefighters were leaving for a second time, dispatchers were notified of yet another alarm, causing firefighters once against to return to the church. At 5:18 a.m., the church’s alarm company took what appeared to be a defective smoke detector offline, and firefighters finally were able to return to their station.

4:50 a.m. — Marion ambulance was notified directly by St. Luke to transfer an unspecified patient to Wesley Woodlawn.

10:26 a.m. — Tampa ambulance and Marion and Tampa firefighters were dispatched after a passer-by provided a vague report of a one-person, one-vehicle wreck on US-56/77 near 350th Rd.

After Tampa firefighters questioned the call, dispatchers switched the call from Tampa firefighters to Lost Springs firefighters.

Lincolnville rescue squad members then questioned whether they might be needed as well. Marion ambulance and Dickinson County firefighters, who had received a separate alert about the same wreck, also joined the call.

When Lost Springs firefighters arrived nine minutes after the call came in, they reported that all units except a single ambulance could stand down.

Tampa ambulance attendants reported that they had not been paged, but dispatchers insisted they had been paged twice with no answer.

Marion ambulance arrived 35 minutes after the initial call. The driver declined to be taken to a hospital, but the ambulance waited until a ride for the driver could be arranged.

10:47 a.m. — Marion firefighters asked for a Marion police officer to meet them for unspecified reasons at the Cenex station on Main St., but when informed that no Marion officers were on duty, they canceled the request.

12:42 p.m. — An 88-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 400 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:51 p.m. — Fire in a vehicle pulled out of but still near a garage in the 100 block of S. Thorp St. in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters.

10:06 p.m. — A death reported by police in the 800 block of Birch St. in Marion was confirmed by Marion ambulance attendants.
