Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
JUNE 30
9:42 a.m. — A 76-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
10:57 a.m. — A 61-year-old woman needing a ride to a hospital for catheter replacement was taken by Marion ambulance to an unspecified hospital from a home in the 200 block of W. 4th St. in Florence. An ambulance supervisor also responded.
11:09 a.m. — A 91-year-old woman who fell and hurt her back at a home in the 100 block of Lombard St. in Lincolnville was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Hillsboro ambulance. Lincolnville first responders arrived within eight minutes and cared for the patient until the ambulance arrived 13 minutes later. Tampa ambulance also was dispatched, but the call was canceled before the ambulance arrived.
7:56 p.m. — A 45-year-old woman bitten by a spider at a home in the 200 block of W. 6th St. in Florence declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
JULY 1
8:20 a.m. — A medical alert on behalf of an 80-year-old woman on Random Rd. at Marion County Park and Lake was determined by Marion ambulance attendants to have been accidentally activated.
11:01 a.m. — A 3-year-old boy who fell off the back of a couch and cut his head in the 100 block of S. Jefferson St. in Lost Springs was examined by Tampa ambulance attendants and taken to a hospital by private vehicle. A first responder arrived within 25 minutes and cared for the patient until the ambulance arrived a minute later.
11:25 a.m. — An 89-year-old man with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
2:46 p.m. — A 68-year-old man whose middle finger was traumatically amputated was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
THURSDAY
9:53 a.m. — Florence firefighters were dispatched to check a vehicle that had been on fire at Main and 5th Sts. in Florence. Most firefighters were told to disregard the call before they arrived.
FRIDAY
7:31 a.m. — Peabody firefighters were dispatched to help battle a shed fire in Harvey County, but the call was canceled before firefighters arrived.
12:17 p.m. — A stove fire caused by a mechanical failure at a home in the 100 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro was extinguished before Hillsboro firefighters arrived and turned off gas to the stove.
12:54 p.m. — A driver with what were described as a few scrapes and an uninjured 6-year-old involved in an earlier traffic accident at K-15 and 130th Rd. were taken to NMC Health, Newton, by Hillsboro ambulance. Goessel first responders arrived within seven minutes and cared for the patients until the ambulance arrived 18 minutes later.
2:02 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance in Newton, Marion ambulance was dispatched to take to HCH a 73-year-old woman who passed out, fell, and hit her head at Hillsboro Ford. An ambulance supervisor arrived within four minutes and cared for the woman until the ambulance arrived 16 minutes later.
2:26 p.m. — A 74-year-old woman at a farmhouse near 230th and Indigo Rds. was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to St. Luke for hospice care.
8:30 p.m. — Goessel, Hillsboro, and Marion firefighters began standing by during fireworks displays.
10:47 p.m. — An alley tree fire in the 200 block of S. Buller St. in Goessel was contained within 22 minutes by Goessel firefighters. They remained at the fire until 12:06 a.m.
11:43 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman needing lab work was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
INDEPENDENCE DAY
1:13 a.m. — An 89-year-old woman still on the floor after slipping on water, falling, and cutting her leg at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.
Technical problems prevented monitoring of transmissions from 2:48 a.m. until 9:21 a.m.
9:22 a.m. — Fire that started when a storm blew a power line into tree limbs a half-mile south of Goessel on K-15 was extinguished by Goessel firefighters. They also reported a pole and lines down at Buller and Commercial Sts. and multiple streets blocked by large limbs. The downed lines were not immediately reported to Evergy because dispatchers’ telephones were not working. Firefighters continued checking on downed limbs and lines until 11:49 a.m.
12:51 p.m. — A 63-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
3:19 p.m. — A 91-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
4:12 p.m. — With Marion ambulance headed to Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched for a 64-year-old woman with kidney pain and dizziness at Homestead Senior Residences in Marion. She was taken to St. Luke.
5:22 p.m. — Peabody firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance began standing by at Fourth Fest in Peabody.
7:26 p.m. — Marion firefighters helped clean up a fuel leak at the county shops in Marion.
8:32 p.m. — Lehigh and Ramona firefighters began standing by for fireworks there. Hillsboro firefighters also began standing by at 9:08 p.m.
8:48 p.m. — Six people, including a woman with back pain and several children, involved in a two-vehicle rear-end wreck on US-77 at 10th Rd. southeast of Burns were checked by Marion ambulance attendants and an ambulance supervisor but declined to be taken to a hospital. Burns first responders arrived within eight minutes, directing traffic and evaluating the patients until the ambulance arrived. Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by in Hillsboro until 9:33 p.m. in case of additional calls. Traffic was limited until 10 p.m.
SUNDAY
5:13 p.m. — After also checking at the alarm owner’s home, Hillsboro ambulance attendants determined that a medical alarm at Dollar General in Hillsboro was accidentally activated.
8:33 p.m. — Florence firefighters began standing by for a fireworks show there.
MONDAY
5:20 a.m. — An 84-year-old woman with a locked jaw at Peabody Health and Rehab was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:47 a.m. — Hillsboro firefighters built an earthen dam to contain diesel fuel escaping at 15 to 20 gallons per minute from a tanker that overturned in a wreck on US-56 near Orchard Dr. A hazardous materials unit from Herington also responded.
The semi driver was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance with suspected serious injuries. A woman driving another vehicle involved in the accident declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion ambulance and an ambulance supervisor also were dispatched along with an emergency manager and an environmental health officer.
Marion firefighters were dispatched as well but were told they wouldn’t be needed before they arrived.
12:12 p.m. — Hillsboro firefighters left the spill to check on a fire alarm at Parkside Homes, but an alarm company called back to say it was a false alarm before firefighters arrived.
12:44 p.m. — Rescuers searched until 1:29 p.m. before a Hillsboro fire department boat reached a boat stranded on Marion Reservoir with an elderly passenger aboard reportedly needing medical attention.
Because of uncertainty about the location, rescuers initially were sent to Hillsboro Cove, Cottonwood Point, Marion Cove, and French Creek Cove before the boat was found near a Durham Cove boat ramp. A fire department drone and sheriff’s deputies were used to verify the location.
Dispatchers attempted to contact reservoir rangers but got no answer. Marion ambulance, an ambulance supervisor, and the ambulance director also responded. But when eventually located, boat occupants said no medical attention was needed.
Hillsboro firefighters remained at the reservoir until 2:24 p.m.
3:34 p.m. — An 86-year-old woman with stomach cramps at a farmhouse near 150th and Holly Rds. was taken to HCH by a backup ambulance based in Hillsboro.
6:13 p.m. — Peabody firefighters directed traffic after a wreck involving a semi-trailer truck and another vehicle on US-50 west of Jade Rd.
10:10 p.m. — A 68-year-old woman who suffered a heart attack was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.
