Engineering contract for levee work approved

Staff writer

Marion City Council approved a contract with Wilson and Company Inc. Engineers and Architects to conduct engineering services for Cottonwood Valley River levee.

The engineering services are necessary to ensure that the dam meets Federal Emergency Management Agency specifications. The company listed 14 service items including updating river hydrologic and hydraulic models of the Cottonwood River and collecting and evaluating video inspections of the drainage structures to verify structural integrity.

The cost of those services is $231,945. City Administrator Doug Kjellin said the city would pay for the cost using a bond that is also paying for construction on Cedar and Eisenhower streets and work at the water plant. The bond is through Stifel and Nicolaus. He added that it would not affect the current budget year.

“Wilson and Company is the only company in Kansas that will take liability of working on project,” Kjellin said.

Wilson and Company wrote that it would complete services by July 31.
