Espinoza leads Cougars

Out of a trio of Centre Cougar qualifiers at the state track meet in Wichita, Xavier Espinosa had the best luck, capturing a sixth-place medal in the 100.

Espinosa’s 11.53 second time marked the first time since Trevor Troutt captured fourth place in discus in 2010 that the Cougar boys’ team medaled at state.

Espinosa, a junior, has one more year to improve on this year’s finish.

Three inches were all that kept Espinosa from advancing in long jump finals, but two fouls, combined with an 18-foot, 7-inch leap, ended his state run.

Sophomore Aidan Svoboda ran his fastest 800 of the season at 5:15.14, but the pace and sweltering heat got the best of him down the stretch.

The boys’ duo registered three points for a 39th place finish out of 48 teams.

The weekend marked a sad ending for senior Kate Basore, who finished third a year ago, and seventh as a sophomore in javelin.

The third time wasn’t the charm for the three-time Wheat State League champion and record holder with Basore failing to qualify for finals.
