Event to focus on science for kids

A free, interactive program by Mad Science, which promotes science learning among kids, will headline Science Saturday this weekend in Peabody.

A Mad Science chapter based in Kansas City will perform at 1 p.m. at Vintage Bank Park.

A story walk featuring “How Do You Hug a Porcupine?” and marking the end of Peabody Township Library’s summer reading program will follow the 45-minute presentation.

Other science activities planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sunflower Theater include virtual reality tours of the human body and the International Space Station by Army National Guard personnel.

Hands-on learning about snakes, reptiles, and turtles will be offered by D’zz Spot Reptarium and Educational Center at a downtown location to be determined.

Flint Hills Gypsies will have apothecary and natural history displays, Porcupine Tea Company will have science activities, and the library will sponsor a book sale.

“We received a library grant to pay for the Summer Reading Program wrap-up,” library director Rodger Charles said in a release, “and decided to do everything at once for a really fun downtown event.”
