Farmer, 87, dies in grain truck wreck

An 87-year-old farmer who formerly taught in Peabody-Burns schools died Monday after a grain truck he was driving on Old Mill Rd. just north of 10th Rd. veered into a ditch, started to come back onto the road, and overturned.

Lavern Stucky was trapped in the truck’s cab. Peabody firefighters arrived at 5:23 p.m. and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not revive Stucky.

“The ditches are pretty steep there, and there’s no shoulder,” Undersheriff Larry Starkey said. “Once you go off the shoulder, it’s pretty hard to get it back.”

Peabody fire chief Colton Glenn said truck’s horn was blaring as the truck entered the ditch and started coming back onto the road.

Hillsboro ambulance arrived at 5:49 p.m. Nurse practitioner Tracy Grafton, who came upon the wreck, declared Stucky dead.

A LifeSave helicopter ambulance was canceled. Coroner Don Hodson arrived at 6:09 p.m.
