FFA members compete in career development events

FFA members from Marion and Centre competed Sept. 27 in district contests at Little River.
In nursery landscape, members identified 50 live plant samples; diagnosed pests, plant disorders, and weeds; and took a general knowledge exam of the nursery landscape industry.
Centre’s senior team placed first. Helping the team were Karsen Kroupa, first-place individual; Leah Brunner, third; Isabel Rziha, eighth; and Emilee Remmers, ninth.
Marion finished fifth, led by Mickelly Soyez, fifth; Caitlyn Thornhill, 10th, and Keenan Lange, 15th.
In land and homesite judging, members evaluated four land pits and four homesite pits. They studied soil textures, permeability, slope, erosion, soil depth, and surface runoff, and provided a final evaluation, including recommendations for vegetative treatments, mechanical treatments, and any fertilizer or soil amendments.
A Centre senior field team placed fourth in homesite and fourth in land. Blaise Kitzmiller placed sixth, Kroupa ninth, and Bina 11th in homesite, and Kroupa placed sixth and Bina 11th in land evaluations.
