Field events lead boys to win at Halstead Invitational

The Marion boys’ track team won the Conrad Nightengale Invitational on Friday at Halstead, largely on the strength of its field events.
Zach Hammond won the pole vault with a vault of 12, feet, 6 inches. Seth Snelling tied for fourth place with a vault of 10-6. James Jones won the triple jump at 42-8¼. Hammond and Patrick McCarty tied for fifth place in high jump at 5-4.
Nick Meyer won the discus at 140-11; Kyle Palic placed fourth at 125-2; and Morgan Wheeler tied for fifth at 122-0. Meyer placed fourth in shot put at 44-2; Wheeler was fifth at 43-4¼. Palic placed third in javelin, 147-9; and John Nordquist was fourth, 145-4.
“Our jumpers and field event people have had a tough season so far due to the weather, but it has been the same for all the other teams, so we just have to keep pushing,” head coach Grant Thierolf said.
Jones placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.83 seconds. Tyler Neufeld was fourth in the 400-meters at 55.46.
Brody Carroll was fourth in the 300 hurdles, 42.96.
McCarty, Neufeld, Carroll, and Jones teamed up to place second in the 4x400 relay, 3:36.57. Jordon Hett, Neufeld, McCarty, and Carroll placed fifth in the 4x800, 9:18.03.
Girls
Marshelle Mermis placed fourth in long jump, 15-2, fifth in the 400, 1:03.49; and fifth in the 200, 27.97.
Erika Hess placed sixth in high jump, 4-4. Kirsten Hansen tied for sixth in pole vault, 8-0, and fifth in 100 hurdles, 17.62. McKenzee Remmers placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run, 5:57.17. Katey Ehrlich was third in the 300-meter hurdles, 50.59.
The 4x800 relay team of Kaelyn Thierolf, Ehrlich, Kelli Hess, and Remmers placed sixth, 11:25.89. In the 4x100, the team of Emily Schneider, Erika Hess, Hansen, and Alicia Maloney placed sixth, 54.63. In the 4x400, Ehrlich, Hansen, Kelli Hess, and Mermis placed fourth, 4:22.21.
