Flood damage closes Kanza causeway

Staff writer

Damaged by high water in recent weeks, a causeway bridge on Kanza Rd. between 250th and 270th Rds was closed Tuesday as a safety measure.

“Erosion is really bad, and it’s getting under the roadway now,” road and bridge superintendent Randy Crawford said. “Eventually it’ll wash out the dirt and asphalt that supports the roads. We don’t know when the thing could collapse.”

Crawford estimated it will cost $50,000 to $70,000 to fix the bridge.

“It’s just gonna be kind of time consuming,” he said.

The county would have to rent equipment if crews were to fix it themselves but is looking into other options.

“We’re looking at contracting it out because of all our other issues,” Crawford said. “Hopefully we can find someone, and if not we are going to have to find some time to do it.”

Commissioner Dan Holub expressed concerns about the high traffic Monday leading to the shutdown Tuesday.

“If it’s a safety issue, we need to shut it down,” he said.
