After months of planning, core drilling on Florence’s levee is projected to start within the next few weeks, Mayor Bob Gayle said at Monday’s city council meeting.

Work on the levee will likely last until June, but the drilling could finish in early spring.

The timeline will allow Florence to use its certificates of deposit to fund the project, but some interest might be lost depending on when the project finishes, Gayle said.

The city should stop handling finances for Florence softball team since it leads to expenses like paying for team shirts from Florence’s Labor Day tournament, councilman Matt Williams said.

“If a team wants to have a treasurer, that’s up to them,” he said. “I don’t think we need to be using Heather, the city clerk.”
