Florence pedestrian dies in train accident

Howard Savage, 71, Florence, died after being struck by a train at 4:15 p.m. Sunday near US-50 and Union Rd. southwest of Florence.

An eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was traveling approximately 65 mph when the incident occurred, according to a press release issued by sheriff Robert Craft.

“It appears the individual may have fallen or intentionally laid on the tracks,” Craft said.

BNSF spokesperson Andy Williams said Savage was not at a railroad crossing.

Sheriff’s officers, Florence EMS, Peabody EMS, and BNSF officials responded.
