Florence to get disc golf course

Staff writer

A small but dedicated group of Florence citizens plans to transform an old Florence Middle School football field and track area into a nine-hole disc golf course.

Florence resident John Branson, a pastor who performs social work in Wichita, sees the benefits of disc golf.

“There’s not much for kids to do in Florence,” Branson said. “One of the things I do a lot of with kids in my job is disc golf. It’s a fun outdoor activity.”

Florence City Council approved the course in May on the condition that the group pay all project costs.

“We’d like to transform the whole area into more of a general park area,” Branson said, “maybe add a skate park or even a go-cart track where the track is, but first we just need to get the disk golf baskets.”

Eddie and Darla Spencer, Tyson and Melanie Grimmett, Mary Jane Grimmett, and Branson’s wife, Trisha, round out the group.

They have a project fundraiser scheduled for 4 p.m. July 12 at Florence City Park. Barbecue will be served for a free-will donation.

Their goal is to raise $3,000 to $4,000 for course baskets and tee boxes.
