Florence to host Labor Day Celebration this weekend

Prairie Rose Rangers will perform Sunday evening

“Flint Hills Magic” is the theme of this year’s Labor Day celebration in Florence. The three-day event begins with citywide garage sales at 8 a.m. Sept. 5 followed at 10 a.m. by “King of the Hill” kids’ soap box derby, and McClain’s Kids’ Ranch Rodeo and Mutton Bustin’ at 3:30 p.m. Saturday events will also feature a Poker Run at 4:30 p.m. and street dance at 8 p.m., featuring music by the Callahan Band.

Sunday events will feature a car show at noon on Main Street. Ron Tibbetts, “The Bubble Man,” with his giant bubble-making machine will perform at 3:30 p.m. at the Ambulance Building on Main Street. A gospel concert will be at 5:30 p.m. featuring “Hearts 4 Him,” a men’s vocal ensemble. Prairie Rose Rangers, featuring Orin Friesen, will perform at 7 p.m. Prior to the musical entertainment, event-goers can also enjoy a hog roast which will be at 4:30 p.m. on Main Street and an ice cream social at 6:15 p.m.

The traditional Labor Day parade will start 11 a.m. Monday. Other events will include a fine arts show, horseshoe pitching contest, flag raising ceremony, kids’ games/turtle races, and countywide FFA Barnyard Olympics.

A new event this year is a co-ed softball tournament which will be held Saturday evening. To enter or for information call Melanie Grimmett, (620) 381-1083.

A popular place to visit during the Labor Day weekend will be the Mountain Man Rendezvous, south of Florence.

A $5 button is required for admission to most events.
