Florence wants diverse rec offerings

A new recreational district for Marion-Florence should offer programming that appeals to older residents, not just youth.

That’s the message Florence Mayor Bob Gale stressed to superintendent Lee Leiker and school board members Monday.

“We do have or have had programs that have been successful for seniors,” Gale said, noting that water aerobics classes, for example, had been beneficial and fun for older residents.

Florence hopes to have two members on the district’s board, council member Matt Williams said.

“We want to make sure this rec program really will be representative of Florence,” Williams said.
