Football gears up for playoffs

Staff writers

Marion lost a last-minute heartbreaker, Hillsboro rediscovered its winning ways, Peabody-Burns also won by a lopsided score, and Centre and Goessel were on the wrong end of one-sided games as the regular season drew to a close Friday.

Attention now shifts to this week’s district playoffs.

Marion

A recovered onside kick and two scores in the last two minutes lifted host Sedgwick to a come-from-behind 35-32 upset over Marion.

Sedgwick quarterback Corey Crumrine was red hot, tossing a 23-yard touchdown pass with two minutes left and a 24-yarder with 38 seconds remaining.

Crumrine was the difference, posting NFL-like stats in completing 27 of 41 passes (65.9%) for 362 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.

Marion quarterback Jack Lanning went only 4-for-17 (23.5%) for 136 yards passing but rushed for an even 100 yards on 24 carries. Trevor Schafers added 89 on 16 carries.

As a team, the Warriors out-rushed the Cardinals 202 yards to 45. Emphasizing its ground game, Marion held a edge in time of possession, 28:52 to 19:07, but lost two fumbles to Sedgwick’s one and was penalized five times for 45 yards compared to Sedgwick’s two for 15 yards.

The Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a one-yard run by Schafers and a 61-yard pass from Lanning to Colby Lallor.

Sedgwick followed up with 21 unanswered points before Marion scored three successive touchdowns of its own.

With two minutes left, the Warriors held a seemingly comfortable 32-21 lead, but Sedgwick scored on a 23-yard pass, recovered an onside kick, then scored a second time to claim its upset and level its season record at 4-4.

The Warriors (5-3) will be hosts for a playoff game Friday against Sacred Heart (4-4).

Hillsboro

Hillsboro kept Lyons winless with a 55-14 non-conference victory Friday.

“Our guys did exactly what we asked them to do versus Lyons,” coach Demetrius Cox said. “They came out and played a solid game in every aspect of the game, and I am so proud of all the guys.”

Top players for Hillsboro were Dawson Boldt, who passed for 288 yards; Wyatt Plenert, who rushed for 88; and Nicholas Smith, who had 162 receiving yards.

Seven different Trojans scored touchdowns, four by air.

Hillsboro (2-6) will be on the road for Friday’s playoff game against Kingman (8-0).

“We have a tough first-round opponent in Kingman,” Cox said, “but I have all the confidence in my guys that if they can come out and play hard for four quarters, we can surprise a lot of people.

“It’s the playoffs, and some crazy things happen in the playoffs.”

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns came to play in the Warriors’ road non-conference game against Centre, winning 76-31.

Colton Gossen found the end zone six times with Cade Gossen, Fred Wortmann, and Jefferson Glover scoring at least one touchdown of their own. Colton Gossen finished with 131 rushing and 24 receiving yards. He also lead the defense with 14 tackles.

“We got off to a slow start defensively,” coach Kody Tegtmeier said. “We didn’t have school Friday, so the kids were a bit out of sync. But after a few halftime adjustments, the boys came out firing in the second half.”

This game had playoff implications. The Warriors’ victory means they will be the host team in district play against a winless Chase (0-7) Friday night.

“It’s playoff time, which means records don’t matter,” Tegtmeier said. “Everyone is 0-0, and Chase will be a tough first-round opponent. They have a couple of kids with great size and a very fast athlete at the running back position.

“We are going to have a solid week of practice focusing on tackling low and containing speed.”

Centre

The Cougars lost, 76-31, in their home game Friday against Peabody-Burns.

Centre trailed 26-18 at halftime. Santiago Knepp scored twice for the Cougars.

Knepp was injured and not in the game during the second half, and Peabody-Burns pulled ahead to score another 50 points while Centre scored 13.

Kaigen Brewer scored Centre’s first touchdown in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass from Gentri Holub.

After Robert Spohn caught a 40-yard pass from Holub for a final Centre touchdown, Matthew Basore caught a pass from Holub for the Cougars’ only extra point of the game.

Peabody-Burns scored seven more touchdowns and completed seven point-after attempts in the second half.

Peabody-Burns had 31 carries for 254 yards compared with Centre’s 21 carries for 145 yards.

Knepp was Centre’s leading rusher, with 88 yards. Nick Krch ran for 50 yards.

Holub completed five passes for 96 yards, and Spohn had six passes for 70 yards. Spohn had 60 receiving yards, and Holub had 41.

Centre will play Natoma at home Thursday in playoff quarter-finals.

Goessel

Against one of the toughest teams in the state, Goessel started strong Friday.

Little River marched to the three yard line, but Goessel recovered a fumble to kill that drive.

Little River then intercepted a pass in the end zone to stall a Bluebird drive.

After a Redskin touchdown, the Bluebirds responded with a Grant Bryant pass to Jake Wiens for a 34 yard touchdown. Little River scored again in the first quarter, and the Redskin defense held the Bluebirds on fourth down three times in the second, allowing Little River to score each time and lead 40-8 at halftime.

After another Little River score, Goessel recovered another Redskin fumble. The Bluebirds capped the drive with a seven-yard pass from Noah Schrag to Wiens early in the fourth quarter, but the game ended 60-14 after two more touchdowns by Little River.

The Bluebirds attempted 27 passing plays. Jake Wiens, Klay Willis, Jake Flaming, Caleb Burkholder, and Noah Schrag were all on the receiving end.

Goessel finished in third place in district play with a record of 3-2 and overall 4-4. The Bluebirds will compete this weekend at Wichita Independent (7-1).
