FOOTBALL: Peabody-Burns cites need for consistency

Staff writer

Kody Tegtmeier sees last year’s win over Centre as an example of how he wants Peabody-Burns football to play this season.

“We hustled and ran after the ball,” he said. “We flew after the ball defensively, were all over, and tackled well. We did a lot of really good things in that game.”

Tegtmeier is looking to recapture that success, and this time ride it to more than two season wins.

“We have to prepare really well and be ready for that challenge,” he said. “Take things as a challenge, not a threat.”

Having seven experienced players, and entering his third year as coach, makes for a much better outlook, Tegmeier said.

Junior Philip Young, who is entering his third year taking snaps as a quarterback and his second year as starter, will be an asset this year.

“He’s starting to understand my philosophy and thought process,” Tegtmeier said. “Getting a quarterback who can understand what his coach is thinking, go out there and do it is a huge thing. Trying to get him to be a coach on the field is what my thought is for the future.”

Have a balanced attack with the versatility to run effectively or stretch the field in the passing game is ideal, but Tegtmeier knows pieces have to fall in the right places for that to happen.

“I feel like we have a large set of athletes where we can drop back and throw it all over the field,” he said. “At the same time, I wanted to do that last year, but we didn’t have the personnel up front to give us time to throw that ball.”
