Foundation seeks grant applications

Staff writer

Peabody Community Foundation’s next grant cycle is open for applications through Jan. 4.

Up for grabs is $9,500.

The foundation offers two annual grant cycles — one for the community and one for teachers.

Representatives of 16 charitable groups participated in the foundation’s annual Giving Tuesday/Winterfest program on Nov. 29, visiting with community members about the work they do.

More than $5,000 was raised that evening.

“It’s due to the local community’s generosity that we’re able to make grants every year,” foundation director Becky Nickel said.

The foundation has $16,380 remaining to matched donations to the work on housing and community development, Sunflower Theatre, the city pool and parks as well as operating funds. Nickel said $23,800 was available in matching funds. Wind farmer owner Orsted, the Jewell Family Foundation, and two anonymous donors made that possible, Nickel said.

This year, 11 grants have supported Peabody Food Bank, equipment for the city pool, emergency assistance, building improvements to Peabody Township Library, and downtown Christmas lights.

Applications for the current cycle will be reviewed by three Peabody residents and two foundation board members. Applicants must have nonprofit status or be formally tied to a group that does. Applications are available at centralkansascf.org.

The foundation recently awarded grants to five teachers for projects including replacing books in the high school library, buying equipment to make cheerleading gear in-house, knife sets for consumer science kitchens, and college visits.
