Fourth Fest is right around the corner

Staff writer

Peabody’s annual Fourth Fest, in its 93rd year, will be exploding around us in four short weeks.

Events for the day are similar to years past. A complete schedule with times and contact numbers will be printed in the next edition of “Explore.”

However, to help you begin your planning for the big extravaganza in Peabody, here is what is on the agenda so far.

The dog show will again be held at Santa Fe Park in the morning, sponsored by Peabody American Legion Auxiliary. This is a perennial favorite and the pups never cease to entertain.

An all-day flea market will take place in the city park near the playground area — treasure hunting at its best.

A volleyball tournament will entertain folks at the volleyball pit at the corner of Locust St. and Second St.

Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission will sponsor kids’ games in the city park and a free swim day at Peabody Municipal Pool.

A carnival will be on hand all weekend and food and drink vendors will be set up in the park.

The annual parade down Walnut St. from the high school to the bank corner is always a crowd-pleaser. Prizes will be awarded to the best floats and decorated children’s bicycles. Plenty of candy is thrown. The parade begins at 5 p.m. with line-up at the high school at 4 p.m.

Peabody High School and Peabody-Burns High School alumni are invited to the annual alumni dance at the American Legion on July 3.

Card sharks can participate in the Bob Phillips Jr. Texas hold ’em poker tournament, with proceeds going to a scholarship fund at PBHS.

The grand finale for the Fourth is the 93rd fireworks show at dusk at the city park. Buttons will be a mere $3 again this year and rumor has it that once again there will be 1 million explosions between start and finish.

Enjoy Chingawassa Days and then be thinking about spending the Fourth of July in Peabody. Watch for all the details in the next edition of “Explore” on June 25.
