Fred William Putroff Sr.

Fred William Puttroff Sr., 86, of Newton died Friday at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

He was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Newton to Fred Merrill and Lucille Marie Blevins Puttroff. He attended Newton schools and graduated in 1943. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad before joining the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the military, he resumed working for the railroad.

He married Roberta Jean Reynolds on Dec. 1, 1950, in Newton. They later divorced, and she died in 2004. He married Edith Melzer on Dec. 29, 1974, in Newton. She preceded him in death in 2001.

He is survived by two sons, Fred W. Puttroff Jr. of Marion and Eric Puttroff of Newton; three daughters, Judie Brewer of Newton, Karen Ryan of Escondido, Calif., and Kelly Puttroff of McPherson; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John Michael Puttroff and Phillip Gene Puttroff; two brothers, James Robert Puttroff and John Merrill Puttroff; and a sister, Alice Jewel “Judy”Wood.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial funds have been established for the Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marion County Emergency Medical Service, and The Lord’s Diner of Wichita.
