Frequent substitute teachers to get raise

Substitute teachers will get a raise, two veteran educators will retire, and three students will get class credit for observing those actions at Monday’s meeting of the Hillsboro school board.
Hillsboro Elementary School principal Evan Yoder and district superintendent Max Heinrichs announced their retirements after this school year.
At the meeting, pay for long-term substitute teachers was upgraded.
For the first 10 days a teacher substitutes for a class, he or she will receive regular substitute pay of $10.95 an hour. From the 11th day onward, they will receive $11.35 an hour, the same as a beginning full-time employee.
Board member Rod Koons said the change was inspired by how substitute teachers took over in September after a COVID outbreak quarantined most of Hillsboro’s regular teachers.
“I want to make it worth their time to work with us,” he said.
Koons also brought attention to an offer of $53,000 on 508 E A St., a property neighboring the high school. The district bought the property over a year ago with the intent of removing the house and expanding school grounds.
USD 410’s annual financial audit report was read, and all categories were either stable or improving. There was a 29% increase in electricity costs, however, consuming $40,000 more than budgeted. Fuel prices are also estimated to go up.
