From the Sidelines

You blinked and now it’s halfway over.

The 2008-09 Marion High School year is more than halfway complete, and with first-round action of the Trojan Classic finished, so is the winter sports season.

Below is a list of the top-five performances of the MHS winter sports season.

5. Warrior boys dump Lyons 63-50

The Lyons Lions had been a thorn in the Warriors’ sides during the years since Marion moved to the MCAA with hot-shooting guards from the outside.

However, in a Jan. 9 match-up, the Warriors used hot shooting all around to notch their first league win in the new USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center.

4. Zeiner scores 31 in a loss

The junior connected on 10 shots for the game and 11-of-13 free throws en route to a career-high 31 points Dec. 19 against Moundridge. The most impressive part was the points didn’t come off of 30-plus shots, but only 16.

The forward was in a zone all night and she, and the team, did all they could to defeat the No. 3 ranked team in 2A.

The Warriors fell, 65-61, but head coach Randy Savage said he was pleased with the entire team’s performance.

3. Vogel’s near double-double

One could argue someone who had a double-double (registering double digits in two stat categories) played better than someone who did not.

However, during the Lyons victory Warrior junior Eric Vogel notched career-highs in points (21) and rebounds (9).

Both remain season-highs for any Warrior player.

For the season, Vogel is averaging 12 points and seven rebounds.

2. Heerey sick, still knocks down five threes

She had done it once before this season, but never in such Michael Jordan-esque fashion.

OK, that may be going a little far, but after not feeling well during much of the day and leading up to the game, Kayley Heerey knocked down 5-of-7 three pointers Friday at Hoisington, helping secure the team’s third league-victory of the season.

She was human, missing all seven of her two-point field goals, but still ended up with a game-high 19 points.

1. Wildin’s win streak

Basketball usually dominates the winter sports talk, mainly because not a lot of people know much about wrestling.

However, it doesn’t take a genius to understand Warrior wrestler Dillon Wildin is good.

The junior won his first 15 matches this season to claim the number one ranking in the state at the 1-3A level.

He lost his first match this past weekend at Halstead to an undefeated opponent, but bounced back to take third place and is 18-1 on the season.

It’s not official, but more than likely than winning streak to start the season was a school record.

It also doesn’t take a genius to figure out that probably will not be the only one Wildin ends up breaking.
