Girls lose close contest to Hope

The Marion High School girls basketball team lost to Hope, 32-26, Tuesday in the opening round of the Centre Invitational.

With her scoring confidence revitalized, Whitney Gordon submitted her third consecutive double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Marion junior was also clutch. Down 27-19 in the fourth quarter, Gordon nailed a 3-pointer in the corner. She then hit a turnaround jump shot on a play where Emily Hett cut in front of Gordon, freeing the Marion center from her defender just long enough to catch the ball and put up the shot.

Raelyn Lorson answered by driving to the rim and hitting a layup despite the foul. She hit the free throw to put Hope up 30-24.

Gordon responded by grabbing an offensive rebound between two defenders and then laying the ball in the hoop.

After a Hope turnover, Gordon grabbed another offensive rebound on the next possession. Being away from the basket, she passed the ball to Ehrlich who missed a 3-pointer.

Jacelyn Barter iced the game for Lions with two free throws.

Although the Warriors held Hope to 32.5 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers, coach Randy Savage was not pleased with the performance.

“It was a very lethargic, unacceptable performance. Ultimately, it’s my fault for not having them ready to play,” Savage said. “We didn’t play any defense well. Our man was bad; our two zones were bad.”
