GOESSEL: Bluebirds field 18 golfers for spring

Staff writer

Coach Chad Lindeman expects letter-winners from last year to lead Goessel’s golf team this year.

Noah Schrag, a sophomore this year, led the team with some of the lowest scores last season.

Seniors Caiden Duerksen, Logan Sterk, Bane Spurlin, and Gunnar Davis will bring experience from last year.

With improving scores for each of the varsity players, there are hopes of qualifying for the 1A state golf tournament as a team.

“We played kind of crummy at regionals last year on a long tough course,” reflected Caiden Duerksen, the lone Bluebird to play in last year’s state tournament.

Spurlin, Sterk, and Davis hope to break the 100-stroke threshold; Duerksen played in the 90s last season, and Schrag has hopes to be regularly in the low 80s.

The 1A state tournament is scheduled to be a two-day event at Hesston Golf Park.

Goessel has 18 students signed up for golf.

“Practices will be competitive with this many players out for golf,” he said. “There may be a number of players vying for the six varsity spots, which will make the top golfers stronger.”

The Bluebirds will kick off the season Tuesday 5 at Herington and then participate April 8 at Hillsboro.
