Goessel boys coast to victory

A fast start led to a lopsided victory Friday by Goessel’s boys while the girls split a pair of games Thursday and Friday.
Boys
With Skyler Wuest scoring the first 13 points for Goessel, the Bluebirds coasted to a 52-21 running clock victory Friday over Herington.
Wuest ended the game with 19 points as nine players from Goessel got in the scoring column.
The Bluebirds led 27-2 at the end of the first quarter and 41-9 at halftime. With the game clearly in their control, they relaxed their pressure defense and played a more deliberate style in the second half.
Caleb Burkholder was the next highest scorer for Goessel with eight.
Heading into home games Tuesday with Wichita Classical and Thursday with Little River, the Goessel boys were 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the Wheat State League.
Girls
After a 52-20 victory earlier in the week over Wakefield, Goessel’s girls got off to a slow start Thursday against the Wichita Defenders, a game added because Peabody-Burns did not field a girls team this year.
The Defenders took a 9-8 lead before the Bluebirds were able to pull ahead 14-11, but by halftime Wichita had a 16-14 lead.
Five different Bluebirds scored in the third quarter, and Goessel surged ahead 28-23 at the end of the quarter, maintaining the lead to secure a 37-26 victory.
Cheyenne Sawyer led the team in scoring with 12. Lyna Lehrman added nine.
The Bluebird girls trailed the entire game at Herington on Friday. Braylyn Hoopes hit a three-pointer in each quarter but it was not enough. The Railers scored 12 consecutive points in the second quarter and led 27-10 at halftime. Goessel lost by a final score of 48-28.
Hoopes lead Bluebird scorers with 12. Sawyer had 7.
The girls went into this week 4-3 in league games and 10-7 overall.
