Dominating from start to finish, Goessel’s boys beat Pretty Prairie, 61-34, Saturday to place fifth in the Burrton Tournament.
Senior Caiden Duerksen started strong with six quick points for the Bluebirds and scored 15 in the first half, leading the Bluebirds to a 32-20 halftime lead.
Duerksen finished the game with 23. Tim Schrag had a season-high 14, and Caleb Burkholder scored 10.
Duerksen and fellow senior Skyler Wuest were selected to the all-tournament team.
The Bluebirds, 8-3 for the season, will play Moundridge at home Friday.
Earlier in the tournament, Goessel defeated Burrton, 57-28, Thursday in what coach Curtis Guhr described as “a great team win.”
Recording 14 assists and holding Burrton shooters to 16% from the field, Goessel out-rebounded Burrton, 41-23.
Duerksen again led Bluebird scorers with 15. Wuest, who led the team with 16 in its opening round 55-45 loss to Central Christian, had 13.
Girls
An early 3-0 lead turned into a 15-5 first-quarter deficit Friday as Moundridge smothered Goessel’s girls, 51-19.
The taller Wildcats allowed Goessel only one shot on each possession, and Goessel scored only two points in the third quarter.
Kaleigh Guhr and Braylyn Hoopes were the Bluebirds’ leading scorers with just five points apiece.
Goessel is 5-3 overall and will participate this week at a tournament in Fairfield.
