Although several key runners graduated from the team that placed fifth last year at the Class 1A state cross-country meet, Javin Schmidt and Joey Lapp hope to bring the same enthusiasm as leaders on the Goessel boys team this year.

The pair earned letters last year and bring state experience to this year’s team. A total of five boys reported for practice this season.

Cheyenne Sawyer and Braylyn Hoopes will bring experience from last year to the girls team.

Although only seven girls have reported for practice, Goessel hopes to medal in many meets throughout the year.

“The reason I am out for cross country is for self-improvement,” senior Joey Lapp said.

Senior Sarah Spurlin agreed, saying: “Cross-country is a good way to stay in shape.”

Both look forward to playing basketball when seasons change.

“We should have good competition within the team as younger runners challenge each other,” coach Donna Washmon said.

Against several 3A and 4A schools, the Bluebirds opened the season last week at the Great Life Golf Course in Abilene.

Returning runners turned in faster times than a year ago. For the boys, Schmidt led the Bluebirds with a time of 21:30.10 in the 5,000 meters.

“Ninety degree weather is way too hot,” Lapp said.

For the Goessel girls, Sawyer finished in 27:01.60 and captured 21st place.
