Goessel doubles up Peabody-Burns

Goessel and Peabody-Burns boys teams both started slow Friday night at the Bluebird gym, as neither team scored for more than four minutes.

Caiden Duerksen started the Bluebirds’ scoring with two baskets, and Goessel was off to a 7-0 lead.

Jacob Partridge scored the Warriors’ only points in the first quarter, with Goessel leading 9-2.

A flurry of steals and layups in the second quarter netted Goessel a 16-2 run.

Jack Parks hit two 3-pointers for Peabody-Burns as the second quarter came to an end, but Goessel secured the halftime lead 32-15. The Bluebirds accumulated 10 steals in the first 16 minutes.

The Warriors could not get a basket for five minutes in the third quarter, and Goessel stretched their lead to 48-18 by quarter’s end.

With the running clock in the fourth quarter, the Bluebirds outscored Peabody-Burns 9-4 for the 57-22 win.

This was the first Wheat State League game for both teams.

Goessel has four wins in a row and sits at 4-1. After the holiday break, the team returns to action with home games Jan. 7 and 10.

Peabody-Burns sits at 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in WSL play. The Warriors’ next game is Jan. 7 at Little River.

24 not enough
for Peabody girls

Anna Eldridge’s 24 points weren’t enough for Peabody-Burns to overcome the Bluebirds on Friday, and Goessel took the 54-37 win at home.

The Bluebirds had the advantage in distribution, with two players in double figures, and three more scoring at least five points.

With both teams looking for their first wins of the season, Goessel scored five points out of the gate, but Peabody-Burns kept the score close with six from Eldridge.

The Bluebirds went on a 7-1 run at the end of the first quarter to lead 15-7, and the trend continued into the second quarter.

Elizabeth Schmucker scored eight of her 20 points in the second quarter and Goessel took a commanding 31-14 lead at half time.

Peabody-Burns struck back with five straight points to open the third quarter thanks to Mckayla Hauck and Skylre Stucky.

Elizabeth Alderfer made sure Goessel maintained a 42-26 at the end of the quarter, scoring six points in the third.

The Warriors scored nine points from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, but the Bluebirds coasted to a 54-37 win.

Goessel is now 1-4 overall and 1-0 in Wheat State League games.

The loss drops Peabody-Burns to 0-6, and 0-1 in WSL play.
