Goessel’s season ends at semifinal

Staff writer

Scoring in single digits for each of the first three quarters made it difficult Thursday for Goessel.

The Bluebirds trailed 13-9 at the end of one period in their semifinal game with Little River at the Burrton sub-state tournament.

The second quarter was even more difficult as Goessel only scored six points and trailed 27-15.

Skyler Wuest scored five of Goessel’s seven points in the third quarter. The Bluebirds trailed by 16 going into the final period.

Little River scored first in the fourth quarter, taking its biggest lead of the night, 40-22. But the Bluebird offense then came to life — a little too late.

Wuest hit a jumper, and Caiden Duerksen hit one of two free throws. Noah Schrag stepped up to the line for two more free throws. Caleb Burkholder scored three points, and the Bluebirds trailed by 10 points with less than four minutes to play.

Timothy Schrag hit a contested three-pointer, and Little River converted only seven of 14 free throws, but the Bluebirds could not take advantage of the misses.

Wuest closed out the Bluebird scoring with four points, and Goessel lost by a final score of 51-40.

Wuest finished his senior year with a 17-point performance. The Bluebird season ended with a 15-7 record.
