Gordon named first team in basketball

Staff writer

Marion High School senior Whitney Gordon has been named to the Heart of America League girls’ basketball all-league first team. Gordon’s selection came as no surprise to Marion coach Randy Savage.

“It was a no-brainer,” Savage said. “She deserved to be there. She was the only girl in the league that averaged a double-double.”

Gordon averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds per game.

As the Lady Warriors’ only senior, Gordon was pressed into modifying her game from prior seasons to assume greater leadership both on and off the court, Savage said.

“We were asking her to do some different things than she had in the past. She was our primary ball-handler against full-court pressure,” Savage said.

“I’ll miss having her around because she was doing some things off the court that you just need kids doing,” he said. “It was great she took the bull by the horns, and it meant much more that it was coming from another player instead of me.”

Gordon will play basketball for the University of Wyoming this fall.
