Gym to celebrate 50th year
Staff writer
Goessel High School will celebrate the 50th anniversary Friday of its gymnasium — also its occasional prom ballroom and socially distanced cafeteria.
Admission will be free for Goessel alumni and students and for children. Admission for other adults will cost $1.
Events will include a drawing for a quilt portraying the school’s Bluebirds mascot and two alumni scrimmages preceding junior varsity and varsity games.
Before the gym was constructed, Goessel used a facility that later became a junior high auditorium. A stage was used as a bench, and audiences were limited to seating on top of three walls. There was only one court, and a mechanical scoreboard was limited to two digits.
The gym opened Dec. 1, 1970. The former gymnasium had its stage expanded and floor inclined. A cafeteria, library, music room, and several classrooms were added.
Goessel alumni may take home photos, trophies, and memorabilia for older teams that no longer fit in trophy cases.
