Have you ever set a record?

Odds are, there aren’t a lot of people in Marion County who have set a world record.

I know I haven’t. When I was in grade school, I tried a few times at different records, but something always got in the way. I didn’t have the endurance, or the attention span, or the time, or the organizational skills.

So imagine my excitement when Marion County Park and Lake Superintendent Steve Hudson announced his plans to set a record for world’s largest marshmallow roast at our own county lake. It started as a joke of what to do with the debris from a ferocious thunderstorm last year, but Hudson is serious about dotting all the “i”s and crossing all the “t”s to make sure that if Marion County residents set the record, they get the recognition.

With all of the work that is going into this effort, it would be a shame if the attempt fell short of Hudson’s goal of 1,000 people simultaneously roasting marshmallows. The record attempt is 53 days away, which is plenty of time to start inviting friends to spend what should be a fun day at the lake, toasting marshmallows.

It’s possible I misjudged how important — and how bad — people think the roads in Marion County are. Multiple people have nominated the Pilsen road for a closer look, even after it was featured. But there has been a decided shortage of nominations of other roads.

To recap, we have featured Remington Road between U.S. 56 and Pilsen, 120th Road between Goessel and the McPherson County line, and now 330th Road between Tampa and K-15. I’m honestly surprised people don’t have problems with other roads.

If you would like to nominate a stretch of road for a closer look, e-mail record@marionrecord.com or call (620) 382-2165.
