Heat brings swimmers to pools

Hot weather on the traditional season-opening weekend for municipal pools kept staff busy Monday at Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center.

“It’s crazy chaos,” pool manager Marci Cain said. “It’s perfect weather for opening day. It’s very busy.”

Poolgoers found relief from the heat under new picnic table umbrellas, but otherwise the facilities and routines are familiar.

Last year’s temporary closing of a big water slide until it was cleared by a mandatory state safety inspection has led to one procedural change.

“We do have to enforce the 48-inch rule, and I do have a guard up there in the afternoons,” Cain said.

That guard checking swimmers’ height is one of 12 full-timers, complemented by three part-timers, two food service workers, and three managers.

“It’s a busy business,” Cain said.

An indicator of just how busy Monday was could be found in the number of family passes sold.

“I’ve sold almost 50 family passes today,” Cain said. “That’s good. I think people just want to pay it up front and not have to worry about coming up with $4 to get in.”

With temperatures in the 90s, the top sellers at the concession stand weren’t much of a surprise.

“Popsicles,” Cain said. “10-cent popsicles, and ice cream. We sell a lot of ice cream.”
