Herman H. Unruh, Marion, died Aug. 13, 2008. He led a long life of integrity and exemplary Christian values.

Herman was born Oct. 15, 1913, at Aulne. His father was a miller and shopkeeper and his mother, a dressmaker. He had an older sister, Vivian, and a younger brother, Wilbur. As a young man, Herman always was eager to lend a helping hand to family and neighbors.

Herman married Iva Hett in 1938. They resided in Wichita, where they raised three children. Life centered around Calvary Methodist Church where Herman was involved in Boy Scout leadership, Sunday school teaching, singing in the choir, and accompanying youth retreats to Colorado.

In 1978, Herman and Iva moved to Marion where he became active at Marion Senior Center, volunteering in many capacities. He also returned to active membership at Aulne United Methodist Church.

Through the years, Herman enjoyed fishing, hunting, rifle marksmanship, stamp and coin collecting, listening to music, and creating objects in his workshop. He took his family on many summer vacation trips to the west, documented by thousands of slides. He and Iva enjoyed sharing slide shows with various senior centers and churches.

He is survived by his wife, Iva; son, Dale and his wife, Phyllis of Peoria, Ill., daughter, Donna and her husband Clint Hoberecht of Woodinville, Wash., and son, Keith and wife Betty of Wichita; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
