A weekend reunion at Hillsboro brought together many classes and friends who hadn’t seen each other in years.

Most classes had individual reunions Saturday noon in addition to attending an evening banquet for 185 alumni and guests at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

The oldest former student to attend was Irene Seibel, 99, who sat at a special table with seven family members and received special recognition during the banquet. Her family members included sons John, Clint, Ralph, and Clyde; daughters Grace and Lavella; and daughter-in-law Evelyn.

“Irene, you don’t need to stand,” speaker Mark Ediger said. “Can we bring you a drink or anything?”

Ediger singled out Grace Seibel.

“Grace used to do my hair,” he said, stroking his bald head. “Something happened. It all fell out.”

Ediger recounted the class of 1972’s musical, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

The musical was performed in a then-empty store that students worked to prepare.

When a reporter from a Wichita television station did a story, one classmate mentioned that students had to go elsewhere to use a bathroom. That student was called to the principal’s office after the principal saw the story.

Alumni took the stage Saturday to sing snippets from the musical.

Other events included Hillsboro High School’s homecoming and alumni tours of Hillsboro Middle/High School building with student presentations.
