Staff writer

Hillsboro was victorious in its third volleyball tournament of the season Saturday while Centre, Goessel and Peabody-Burns had mixed results. Marion had the weekend off and will play again Thursday at Inman.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro defeated Garden Plain 25-19, 25-21 Saturday in a tournament at Douglass, extending their winning streak to 13 matches.

“Garden Plain gave us our toughest match of the day,” coach Sandy Arnold said. “This was a quality win for us as they are a well-coached team with some good hitters and defenders. We had to be scrappy and then rely on our offensive creativity to finish out the play.”

Saturday was the third tournament for the season for Hillsboro. In pool play, the Trojans defeated El Dorado, Douglass, and Augusta. In the semi-finals, Hillsboro defeated Mulvane 25-13, 25-6.

“Our last regular season matches — other than our home tourney — are this Thursday,” Arnold noted, “It will also be our senior night, so it should be a special evening as we honor six seniors: Kori Arnold, Keeley Brewer, D’myia Cox, Kirsten Kluver, Makenna Reed, and Ella Suderman.”

Hillsboro will take on Belle Plaine and Moundridge on Thursday.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns won a tournament match Saturday in Wakefield against Flint Hills Christian 25-18, 18-25, 25-13. But it was unable to progress further in the tournament

“Saturday was a growing day for the team,” coach Rachel Winter said, “We were able to compete in every game. Our goal is to start finishing strong and winning the third set as that has been a weakness for us this year.”

The Warriors were able to do so against Flint Hills Christian but unable to finish against Wakefield and St. Xavier.

“The team continues to grow and perform better as the year progresses and we are looking forward to finishing strong in the post season,” Winter said.

Peabody-Burns will face Elyria Christian on the road Tuesday before closing out the regular season the following Thursday against Marion.

Goessel

After winning earlier in the week over Peabody-Burns. the Bluebirds travelled Saturday to Olpe for a round-robin tournament.

Goessel opened with a close victory in three sets over Bishop Seabury, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23, but lost 21-25, 25-21, 23-25 in another three-set match with Olpe. Wabaunsee thyen defeated Goessel, 25-17, 26-24. Against Northern Heights Goessel won a tight battle 25-23, 25-23. A match against Madison was a bit easier for the Bluebirds, who recorded a 25-14, 25-17 victory to take third place in this tournament

Goessel finished the week with an overall record of 13-7 and will be at a Canton-Galva tournament on Saturday.
