Hillsboro sells former postal site

Hillsboro city council Tuesday agreed to sell 642 square feet of a parking lot of the former post office property, now owned by the Hillsboro Land Bank, to Vyve Broadband.
Vyve, which already has equipment stored inside the building, will build another structure to store equipment.
The council did tie the sale to the city’s need for Vyve to remove an equipment cabinet at the former hospital building.
City administrator Matt Stiles told council members Vyve contacted him this past week to express a sense of urgency about whether the company’s earlier interest in buying the property will be accepted.
“It’s interesting to me that they would be upset with us, given the time we’ve spent on this,” mayor Lou Thurston said. “I suggest we tie this to them getting their cabinet out of the old hospital.”
In other business, council members took care of a laundry list of annual obligations Tuesday, making routine appointments for various city positions and tweaking personnel policies to bring them in line with federal guidelines.
The city council hired Wichita law firm Triplett Woolf Garretson to handle civil matters for the city after former city attorney Josh Boehm moved to Junction City.
The firm will not handle prosecution of criminal complaints. TWG will be paid $30,000 a year.
Council members agreed to pick up a strategic plan they stopped working on in April because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I would suggest setting up a work session to go through it more in depth and see what needs to be added to it,” Stiles said.
Stiles also told council members TC Wireless will begin connecting customers to their service next month.
Stiles also told council members the city splash pad is making progress.
“We’re pretty confident we can get the splash pad project done, if not this year, then next year,” Stiles said. “If we get it done this year it will probably be a very short time it’s open.”
