Hillsboro teams ranked; Marion ends slide

High rankings for Hillsboro’s boys and girls basketball teams continued Tuesday, with the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association’s final ranks of the season listing the girls No. 2 and the boys No. 3 in the state in Class 2A.

Despite losing to eighth-ranked Halstead from Class 3A, the girls trail only Sterling in the 2A rankings. The boys, who bounced back from a loss a week ago to third-ranked Hesston from Class 3A, trail Hoxie and Erie in the 2A rankings.

Elsewhere in the county, Marion’s boys ended an eight-game losing streak, Centre’s boys lost a squeaker, and both Peabody-Burns and Goessel lost.

Marion boys snap 8-game slide

The Marion High School boys’ basketball team can now breathe a much-needed sigh of relief.

The Warriors snapped an 8-game skid Friday night in Elyria, toppling the Elyria Christian Eagles, 44-35.

The victory avenges the Jan. 22 61-35 loss at the same place as Marion bumped its record to 5-13 in the Warriors’ only game of the week with inclimate weather cancelling Tuesday’s.

Tough times continued for the Warrior girls’, though, as they dropped their ninth straight game in a 37-20 loss.

The setback leaves Marion at 1-17, heading into the final week of the regular season.

Trojan boys bounce back

The Hillsboro boys bounced back after having their 13-game winning streak quelled last week by Hesston, completing a perfect week with a make-up game against visiting Garden Plain Thursday.

Both the Owls and hosting opponent Halstead fared as well as the other with the Trojans picking up a pair of commanding 81-34 and 72-29 wins in short fashion.

Trojan coach Darrel Knoll’s team had explosive second quarters to break both games wide open by halftime, with its pesky defense turning the two opponents over 19 and 27 times.

Frank Wichert paced the Trojans against the Owls, scoring a season-best 15 points, coming off the bench.

Greyson Ratzlaff and Matt Potucek combined for 26 with 13 each, and Brekyn Ratzlaff tossed in 12 as Hillsboro erupted for 54 points in the second and third quarters behind a blistering 56 percent from the field.

The team launched another 27-point rally that put the game away for Hillsboro by halftime in Halstead with the Trojans comfortably in front, 55-13.

The Trojans shot a blazing 59% from the field, and the 17-2 edge in offensive rebounding--31-14 overall, and 36 points off 27 turnovers doomed the Dragons.

Brekyn Ratzlaff scored a game-high 16 points and Potucek added 13 in the demolition.

The pair of victories up the Trojans to 15-3 on the season.

Hillsboro girls’ coach Nathan Hiebert sounded earnest, believing his team had momentum for their two toughest games of the season.

The only problem is the Trojans’ senior class has yet to figure out how to beat the Dragons, and one of the state’s premier players in Karena Gerber.

The Trojans came close, but a 22 percent from the floor, including 13 in the first half, is not enough to get by Halstead.

The Dragons’ curse continued, despite the Trojans triple-teaming Gerber, in a 43-29 loss.

Hillsboro stayed within shouting distance for three quarters, but problems getting the lid off the basket kept it playing uphill all night.

Zaylee Werth scored a team-high 10 points as Hillsboro fell to 15-3.

Peabody loses but is off to best start

The Peabody-Burns boys also were winless during the week, falling Friday night in Wichita to Wichita-Classical School, 61-37.

The Warriors fell to 11-7 on the year, but are already off to their best start in a decade.

Centre boys lose in a squeaker

Centre teams added more numbers to the loss column last week.

The boys’ team had their closest contest of the season in a makeup game Thursday at Centre against Rural Vista. They were defeated, 56-53, after leading by as much as 13 points early in the fourth quarter.

They squandered the lead, tying with Rural Vista, 53-53, with 10 seconds to go. A last-second 3-pointer by Rural Vista led to a 3-point loss.

The team shot 38.9% from the field and 47% from beyond the arc. Lane Methvin was leading scorer, with 16 points, followed by Mikey Silhan with 15. Luke Hudson scored 11 points and Santiago Knepp, 7. Tanner Stuchlik had five rebounds.

Both teams played Chase County Friday at Cottonwood Falls. The boys lost, 60-35. The girls lost, 48-37.

The girls trailed, 33-20 at halftime and lost by 11 points. Playing a much taller team, the Cougars didn’t get many rebounds. Samantha Espinoza scored 17 points.

“The girls worked hard, especially on the defensive end to limit second-chance points,” coach Alan Stahlecker said.

The boys fell behind early. They trailed, 34-12 at halftime and lost by 25 points. Methvin led scoring with 15 points, and Silhan scored 9 points. Hudson made 7 points and had 10 rebounds.

After playing makeup games Monday at Wakefield, the Cougars will play in the first round of the sub-state tournament.

The girls are seeded third with a record of 4-8. They will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against sixth seed 1-14 Chase. The boys are seeded sixth at 0-13. They will play against third seed 4-15 Central Plains at 7 p.m. Friday at Claflin.

Goessel falls to top-ranked team

The No 1 ranked team in Class 1A Division 1 dominated the Goessel boys on Thursday night at Little River.

Both Little River and Goessel entered the contest with 8-0 records in the Wheat State League and the Redskins won 70-37.

Early in the second quarter the Bluebirds trailed 14-18, but then Little River went on an 18-2 run.

Goessel trailed at half-time 21-40 and the Redskins kept expanding their lead as the game progressed. Goessel finished second in the Wheat State League standings.

Scoring for the Bluebirds: Caiden Duerksen 9, Jake Hiebert 6, Nate Zogleman 6, Luke Wiens 6, Skyler Wuest 4, Eddie Gaeddert 4, and Dawson Stutzman 2.

The Goessel boys now have a 12-6 record. The 1A sub-state brackets were determined on Saturday and Goessel will be in the same sub-state with Little River, Canton-Galva, Rural Vista and Solomon.

The Bluebirds will face Canton-Galva, again, at Goessel for the first sub-state game on Friday.

Goessel High girls team wins one, and loses one

When Tuesday’s weather forced the cancellation of the Wichita Classical games, Goessel was quick to put that game back on the girls’ calendar for Friday.

The Bluebird defense only allowed the Saints three points in the first quarter and two points in the third period.

Goessel methodically pulled ahead in the contest with quarter scores 11-3, 27-11, 41-13 and a final score of 53-20.

Scoring for Goessel: Lyna Lehrman 10, Elizabeth Schmucker 9, Hailey Lowrance 9, Kaleigh Guhr 8, Bethany Herrel 7, Emily Flaming 4, Rachael Zogleman 3, Sarah Spurlin 2 and Braylyn Hoopes 1.

On Thursday night, Goessel played Little River during their homecoming.

With a stunning display of the inside game, Little River dominated the first quarter 24-0. The Bluebird offense got some life in the second quarter when Hailey Lowrance scored 8 points. Goessel struggled to gain ground in the game, as Little River seemed to capitalize on any Bluebird mistake.

The final score was Little River 57 – Goessel 23.

Scoring for the Bluebirds: Hailey Lowrance 10, Bethany Herrel 5, Elizabeth Schmucker 5, Lyna Lehrman 2 and Jaicee Griffin 1.

Goessel girls’ record is 5-13. The first round Sub-state game for the girls in the 1A class will be on Thursday at Lincoln High School.
