Twenty-two teams participated in the Mid-American Youth Basketball tournament Saturday in Marion.

Boys and girls teams ranging from fourth grade through high school competed at the USD 408 Sports and Aquatic Center and the Marion Elementary School gym.

There were two Marion teams and two Hillsboro teams that played in the tournament.

The Hillsboro fourth- and fifth-grade boys won that division with a 3-0 record, while a Marion team coached by Rod Garman finished 0-3.

A Hillsboro team in the eighth- and ninth-grade division tied for first place with a 2-0 record.

Marion also had a sixth-grade boys team that finished 2-0.

The day was also a success for Marion restaurants.

“One guy I talked to said, ‘I spent $40; I went downtown to eat twice,” Marion athletic director Tod Gordon said. “A lot of people ate downtown.”

The tournament Saturday was just the first installment of MAYB action in Marion; Marion will host a second, larger tournament June 11 through 13.
