Bike Across Kansas has requested permission to have a beer garden with entertainment at Schaeffler House the evening bikers will be at Hillsboro.
City council members heard about the plan and agreed to review applications once they were filed.
Council members also voted Tuesday to apply for Kansas Department of Transportation grants for street work on Adams St. and near the city’s intersections with US-56.
One grant would be used to replace two blocks of Adams St. from 1st to A Sts. With this application, the city must propose a cost match.
Engineer Darin Neufeld told council members the city could propose a 15%, 20%, or 25% cost match. The higher the city’s proposed match, the more likely KDOT would select the project, he said.
With a 25% match, the city’s expense for the $416,500 project would be $184,125.
The second grant would repair concrete on Elm St. near Sonic to US-56, add a deceleration lane, and replace pavement at US-56 and Ash St.
The grant would come under a different KDOT program and has a set 5% city match that would be $26,244 of the $498,636 project.
A dilapidated downtown building at 128 S. Main St. will be torn down and a tree removed from the property after council members voted unanimously to accept a $53,495 bid from Vogts Construction.
Mayor Lou Thurston thanked council members for their vote.
“This building has been on my list since I’ve been mayor, and I thank you,” Thurston said.
