Hope in the Heartland

Writing in the sky

Pastor, Gracepoint church

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went camping. After a good meal, they lay down for the night and went to sleep. Hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

“Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see. What does that tell you,” Holmes asked.

Watson pondered for a minute.

“Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Theologically, I can see that God is omnipotent and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorogically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day later. What does it tell you?” Watson asked.

Holmes was silent for a minute and then spoke.

“Watson, you meathead; someone has stolen our tent.”

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the hardest things to recognize are right in front of us? We humans are often unwilling to acknowledge the obvious. There are times when we don’t see the truth because we’re not looking for it.

But when you look up at the stars, I hope you don’t miss what they’re announcing. The Bible puts their message into words.

“The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and … declaring the work of His hands.” Psalm 19:1.

We’re not lacking physical evidence, just the courageous honesty to acknowledge the obvious. There is a God and this universe is His creation.

Let’s recognize and glorify our Creator.
