Hope in the Heartland: The perfect groom

Pastor of Peabody Bible Church

A groom took his new bride by the hand and said, “Now that we’re married, dear, I hope you won’t mind if I mention a few little defects that I’ve noticed about you.”

“Not at all,” the bride replied. “It was those little defects that kept me from getting a better husband.”

Defects. Imperfections. “Issues.” If you have a pulse, you have these things too. They’re standard equipment on all makes and models of human beings. Every wife has them. Every husband has them. Except one.

Yes, I said that there is one perfect husband.

And before you call to congratulate my wife or call the men in the white suits to come and fit me for a wraparound jacket that ties in the back, let me say that I am most certainly not talking about me. Thanks for being surprised, or thanks for nothing.

I am referring to the truth that the church is pictured in the Bible as a bride and Jesus is represented as being the groom. Jesus is the only perfect “husband.” And even though the church is filled with imperfect people, she has been made pure by the sacrifice of the One to whom she has been “engaged,” Jesus Christ. He makes the church special.

By the way, you’re invited to the wedding feast in heaven. Jesus will come and “pick us up” when it’s time. Are you going to be ready?
