Hospital board grapples with election rules

Staff writer

Hospital District No. 1, which operates St. Luke Hospital, Clinic and Living Center, is considering changing the way it selects directors.

New directors have been selected at the annual meeting in May.

The board plans to decide whether director positions will be placed on the general election ballot in November.

“We have until May to decide,” board chairman Linda Carlson said.

She urged directors to talk to residents in the district and get their input.

Board director Kathy Inlow said the board’s current elections attract few votes.

“You are not going to get people to come to meetings at 5 p.m.,” she said,

Director Dan Holub, a former county commissioner, said if the current system remains, voting hours should be extended.

“It’s a win-win for me,” he said.

If the hospital were to change the way directors are elected, the changes probably would not take effect until November, 2027.
