IN MEMORIAM
EXPANDED EULOGIES
David Koehler
Services were Saturday for David Koehler, 89, Udell, Iowa, who passed away March 9, 2021, at Newton Medical Center in Newton, Kansas.
David was born May 18, 1931, near Unionville, Iowa, to Frederick and Icel (Boyer) Koehler.
After graduating from Udell High School in 1948, David attended Iowa State University for a semester, returned to farming for two years before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1951. During his tenure with the Air Force, he worked as a carpenter. Following his discharge in 1953 because of his father’s heart attack, David returned to farming. Two years later, Marilyn Joiner became his wife on September 25, 1955, at Fairview Church of the Brethren. To this union, three children were born: Darrell, Duane, and Deanna.
David farmed with his father, Frederick, raising corn, beans, oats, hay, and cattle.
He also was very active in the community. David was a member of many civic boards such as: Appanoose County Taxpayers, Farm Bureau, and county Extension Council. He also volunteered as a 4-H leader and held various positions at Fairview Church of the Brethren — church board, youth leader and Sunday school teacher.
David also was an active participant with the county fair, often helping out with “behind the scenes” jobs.
David enjoyed remodeling two older homes with Marilyn, often while singing and yodeling. He enjoyed laughter, kids and quality time with family. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye.
David is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, and his sons Darrell (and wife, Cindy) Koehler, and Duane (and wife, Deanna) Koehler; daughter Deanna (and husband, Grant) Thierolf; and beloved family member, Norman (and wife, Gail) Chau. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Maurer.
He was blessed with many grandchildren: Erik (and wife, Claudia) and Tyler (and wife, Katrina) Brinegar; Lindsey, Joshua and Joel Koehler; Matt, Connor, and Kaelyn Thierolf; and Jason (and wife, Alana), Andrew and Stephanie Chau. David also has four great-grandchildren: Callum and Rowan Brinegar; Aubrey and Chloe Chau; and one on the way for Tyler and Katrina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Caylor, and brothers-in-law Richard Caylor and Roger Maurer.
Services were at Fairview Church of the Brethren, Unionville, Iowa. Pastor Thomas McMullin officiated.
