James Hammond

James Steward Hammond was born June 21, 1927, to Christopher Columbus “CC” Hammond and Dora (Helmbrecht) Hammond in Kiowa County, Kansas. They had moved to Kiowa County from Taswell in Crawford County, Indiana, in an immigrant railroad car along with half-brother George Temple LeGrand.

Steward attended several country schools during his youth, including District 17, District 34, (Farmington) District 22, Kowboy Korner, District 2, and then into Greensburg.

He helped his father farm and ranch until he went into the Air Force in 1945, serving as a medic at Sheppard Field, Texas. After his honorable discharge, he returned to farming during summers and contract work during winters. He helped build telephone lines in Greensburg, Haviland, and Bucklin in the early 1950’s.

He worked construction, helping build booster stations around Greensburg, the Michigan, Wisconsin and City Service, and helped build additions to Northern Natural and Panhandle Eastern.

He helped build Farmers Co-op elevator in Ford, Kansas, Wallingford elevator in Coldwater, and the Co-op elevator in Greensburg. He was a carpenter at the Greensburg elevator, ran a cement mixer during the day shift at Coldwater, and was the deck foreman at Ford.

He helped Beryl Spicer with the construction of Caremore Haven nursing home in Greensburg. He worked at the Mobile service station from 1954-1956.

He married Phyllis Davis in Dec. 1950 and had a daughter, Brenda Jo. They divorced in 1954, and then he married Virginia (Cronic) Morris in Jan. 1970.

Steward died March 13, 2017, in Marion, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home; six children, Brenda Robertson and husband, Butch, Jeff Morris and wife, Carolyn, Wade Morris and wife, Diane, Chandra Morris, Derek Morris and wife, Joyce, and Christopher Hammond and wife, Lanissa; 19 grandchildren, Heath Robertson, Clint Robertson and wife, Lani, Jesse Morris and wife, Annika, Emilee Morris, Tyler Morris, Michael Morris, Evann Deal, Anna Deal, Chelsi Holinde and husband, Chris, Shayla Cook and husband, Kody, Caitlyn Meitner and husband, Cory, Hunter Morris, Jerid Rosenburger, Bryce Morris, Keltonn Morris, Kindra Morris, Lakisha Hammond and husband, Austin, Zachary Hammond, and Colton Hammond; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Steward frequently stated that the best years of his life were the ones he spent raising and teaching his children how to work. He enjoyed going fishing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed his farming and ranching work. He enjoyed the smell of freshly tilled soil and watching new plants grow. He enjoyed seeing new calves playing in the pasture. He also enjoyed raising hogs on the farm. He truly enjoyed his family and friends.

Steward served on several boards during his lifetime. He was a member of First Christian Church of Greensburg where he served as a deacon, elder, and chairman of the board. He was a 50-plus year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of Eastern Star, and post commander of American Legion Marvin C. Stephenson Post No. 103. He also served on the Farm Bureau board of directors for several years. He served on the draft board until it was discontinued. He served on the Senior Center Board of Kiowa County and Fairview Cemetery board there as well. He was a 4-H community leader for more than 20 years.

He lived his first 81 years of life in and around Greensburg, Kansas. He then moved to Marion, Kansas, after the tornado of 2007 destroyed his home. He will be remembered for the many walking sticks he made and donated to anyone who needed or wanted one.

He will be missed by his family and friends, but welcomed Home by God.

Services will be at 1 p.m. April 7, 2017, at Greensburg Christian Church in Greensburg, Kansas.
